special voice, special songs
I stumbled across Thomas Western in Glossop Labour Club and was transfixed by his magical voice. This debut collection features covers of the Irish folk song Polly Vaughan, the English folk song Banks Of Sweet Primroses (also recorded by Fairport Convention), and Lay Down Your Weary Tune by Bob Dylan. The album is bookended by two wonderful original songs. Your Front Door is the lyrical traditional of 500 Miles by The Proclaimers and has a delightful resolution (wait for it). I've never heard a lyric quite like that of Fruit Picking Blues. There are also two brief but beautiful instrumentals on the album.
