Brilliant
If you don't know the Neil Cowley Trio, what on earth are you playing at! They are brilliant, and this album further continues to show what amazing musicians these guys really are.
Engaging
An interesting fusion of jazz, pop and rock styles. While some aficionados will at some stage say that this is too structured for 'proper' jazz, that's utter rubbish. These guys are hugely talented and the level of musicianship is top notch. Tempo and time changes are used to perfection without sounding too over the top, and each of the musicians play their role within the music perfectly.
Stand-out tracks for me are 'Vice Skating', 'Gerald' and what should be titled 'Hug The Greyhound' (not Hug The Ground, I wonder when iTunes will sort that...). All of the tracks gel together to form a fantastically varied and solid album.
Anyone who is interested in jazz, pop or any kind of modern fusion should give it a listen and enjoy it.
intense, intricate, moody, uber-cool...
yes the neil cowley trio are all that and more, but what about the music. its rather good jazz actually. catch the trio live to really understand how the band works together to create the sometimes overwhelming wall of sound and other times such clarity and open spaces, then, re-live it all with this album. A band fronted by a piano genius, but held together by adventurous drumming and the most thoughtful and sympathetic bass in jazz today. Nice.
