Album Review

Listening to Austin indie pop collective Voxtrot is like taking a seminar in U.K. indie pop of the last 20-plus years. Jammed into their sound are the influences of the Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, the Sarah label, the Cure, New Order when they play guitars, and various shoegazers. Unlike many bands that are so in thrall to their influences that they sound like extremely whimsical karaoke, Voxtrot inject enough energy and personality into this EP to make it exciting and fresh rather than academic. The five songs are all well written, ably played, and sung in a charmingly indie accent. "Raised by Wolves" is the kind of rollicking epic that would make Belle & Sebastian proud and is the best song here, though "The Start of Something" (a jangling rocker with an undercoating of mournful horns) and "Long Haul" (a sweet ballad with glockenspiel and male/female harmony vocals) aren't far behind. Only "Missing Pieces" misfires, and that is only because singer Ramesh Srivastava decides to do a spot of yodeling in the chorus. Never a good decision, but it doesn't ruin the record — as it remains a pleasant and breezy introduction to a group for which indie pop fans should have high hopes.

Customer Reviews

Wow - awesome!

A friend recently played me 'Kid Gloves' from the album, which I liked so I listened to a few bits here. The clips sounded good so I downloaded the whole EP. Wow... it's superb, and with loads of different influences from The Strokes to The Smiths and even New Order. Every track here is really excellent, but also different and so you get five very individual songs. 'Missing Pieces' was the first standout track, but it wasn't long before 'The Start of Something' took over as my favourite track. Either way they're all excellent.

WOW

I really like you guys, there aren't many bands around that make peple smile anymore, but you do!!!

Excellent...

I heard 'The Start of Something' at a party and as a huge fan of the smiths and morrissey was confused as i was sure, and embarassed that it was a smiths song that had excaped me! I was informed it wasn't the smiths but indeed Voxtrot. The influences are heavy but well carried and very enjoyable. One of the best tracks I've heard for a very long time

Although they hail from Texas, Voxtrot's animated indie pop easily receives comparisons to Belle & Sebastian and similar European groups. In between studying in Scotland, frontman Ramesh Srivastava founded the project and soon decided to pursue the band full-time in Austin, TX, being joined by Jared Van Fleet (guitar/keyboard), Matt Simon (drums), Mitch Calvert (guitar), and Jason Chronis (bass). Garnering considerable buzz from bloggers as well as high-profile magazines before even releasing...
