iTunes Review

Much has been made of Randy Newman’s fabled Hollywood ancestry (paternal uncles Alfred, Lionel, and Emil were legends in the film scoring trade, while cousins Thomas and David also continue the Newman family business), but his songwriter’s soul seems more inexorably rooted in his mother’s Louisiana heritage. That sensibility — and particularly the long musical shadows of New Orleans — are never far from these spare solo takes on the best of Newman’s early career as one of America’s most gifted — if thoroughly cynical — tunesmiths. Delivered with a haunting, occasionally troubling empathy by a voice that was made for silent movies, Randy embodies a cast of characters here that includes slave-trading pitchman (“Sail Away”), a decidedly human-weary deity (“God’s Song”), even a child murdering psychopath based on Fritz Lang’s M (“In Germany Before the War”, a song he’s been known to dedicate to the “kids in the audience”). Whether voicing deep-seeded Southern bigotry (“Good Old Boys”) or a pervert’s misunderstood romance (“You Can Leave You Hat On”) with equally infectious enthusiasm, Newman isn’t so much musical misanthrope as shrewd judge of character.

Lovely Jubbly

Randy Newman is one of the most underated artists of our time. He is more than soundtrack to a cowboy and a spaceboy. This album shows his diversity in writing from love songs like Marie and comic gems like The Great Nations of Europe to hard hitting songs like God's Song.

Songwriters Take Note

This is how melody, harmony, lyric, rhythm, heart and soul go together. Simply magical.

Absolutely fantastic!

This is a brilliant collection of some of the best of Randy's music! He has a very unique quality and style in his music. If you are hesitating as to purchase it or not - I would personally recommend you do, it's not something that you will regret!

Thanks

Randy Newman was an anomaly among early-'70s singer/songwriters. Though he was slightly influenced by Bob Dylan, his music owed more to New Orleans R&B and traditional pop than folk. Newman developed an idiosyncratic style that alternated between sweeping, cinematic pop and rolling R&B, which were tied together by his nasty sense of humor. Where his peers concentrated on confessional songwriting, Newman drew characters, creating a world filled with misfits, outcasts, charlatans, and con men....
