Tina turning

I'm not sure who wrote the official ITunes review but Phil Spector actually only produced one half of this album. The other half was produced by Ike Turner. Intriguingly, Ike was paid to stay away from the Spector sessions, meaning that this is something close to a solo Tina record, with that dark wailing voice providing the spine to this 12 track collection. And the voice certainly gets a work out - from the iconic River Deep (which famously stiffed at 88 in the Billboard Hot 100 but broke Ike and Tina across Europe) through redefining covers of Martha and the Vandellas' A Love Like Yours and the Drifters' Save the Last Dance for Me to the jangling girl group sounds of I'll Never Need More Than This (which sounds like a lost Ronettes track but with Tina out front). The re-recordings of early Ike and Tina hits are great too, the shrieks on I Idolize You and A Fool In Love are a long way from the acceptable face of black music then proffered by contemporaries like Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick. Those familiar with the harrowing truth of the Turner marriage find It's Gonna Work Out Fine replete with irony but by the time the 1980s rolled around things really would work out for the one time Annie Mae Bullock. Sit back and hear Tina at her 1966 peak, too far ahead of the pack, the title track's failure was explained away that the song was too black for the white audience, too white for the black audience. 12 months later Aretha Franklin's I Never Loved A Man proved a black woman could appeal to a mass audience and retain her soulful integrity. Twenty years later Tina took things full circle, becoming the first black woman in history to sell out stadiums...

Incredible

First heard this in the musical 'Dancing in the street' which tells the story of Motown..... that aside this tune is amazing.

Biography

Formed: 1959

Genre: R&B/Soul

Years Active: '60s, '70s

As husband and wife, Ike & Tina Turner headed up one of the most potent live acts on the R&B circuit during the '60s and early '70s. Guitarist and bandleader Ike kept his ensemble tight and well-drilled while throwing in his own distinctively twangy plucking; lead vocalist Tina was a ferocious whirlwind of power and energy, a raw sexual dynamo who was impossible to contain when she hit the stage, leading some critics to call her the first female singer to embody the true spirit of rock &...
