Astonishing, Soulful and Mesmerizing

It's hard to describe this mans voice as it is like nothing I have heard before. I caught an interview on radio two and he played some of his songs. The man has the voice of an earthbound angel. Take a listen, I guarantee you will be moved.

Another masterpiece

Another amazing album. As good as, if not better than the first. Such a spiritual quality to his voice and the melodies sublime!

Australia’s purest indigenous voice rises to the occasion

Following up on the incredible success of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu’s debut 2008 solo album was never going to be easy. With half a million copies sold worldwide, the blind Aboriginal songwriter with the angelic voice had become a global phenomenon. So for his second release would he simply repeat the same winning formula, or try for something different? Thankfully, the Elcho Island singer and his producer-bassist friend Michael Hohnen have opted for a bit of both on Rrakala. While some of Gurrumul’s new songs, such as ‘Bayini’, ‘Djotarra’, or the beautifully sparse ‘Wulminda’ could easily pass for out-takes from the original album, others highlight more varied influences. ‘Ya Yawirriny’ features a light reggae lilt, and several tracks evoke a distinct Aussie acoustic-country feel.

Three songs are recycled from Yunupingu’s albums with Saltwater Band – the oft-recorded ‘Djilawurr’ (Orange-Footed Scrubfowl), ‘Baru’ (Crocodile), and the emotive ‘Warwu’ (Worry) – but these new versions are sufficiently altered to justify their inclusion here. Alongside Hohnen’s sympathetic double bass, Yunupingu provides most of the accompanying instrumentation himself this time, augmenting his left-handed upside-down guitar strumming with light drumming and some lovely melodic piano. But it’s Gurrumul’s remarkable high-tenor voice – steeped in tradition but thoroughly contemporary – that again is the real star here. With his original lyrics sung in Yolngu language and once again speaking of ancestors, animal totems, cloud formations, longing and his own Gumatj clan, Gurrumul’s ultra-pure vocals continue to possess that unique ability to cross cultural boundaries while touching many hearts. Perfection again.
