Beautiful voice, artfully arranged and good choice of songs
So, nothing that matches the quirky tracks from Hyperboreans like the title track and Birthday. But, I think the arrangements are better with tasteful accordion and a slightly under-mixed hurry gurdy. The songs are all drawn from the tradition and combined with tunes written by Jackie or her collaborators. There are some new takes on well known songs (well at least to me) like Marrow Bones and Sweet Nightingale with some less well known stuff like Four Pence a Day and Poor Murdered Woman. Maybe I should spend more time in the South West. You should spend some time with this collection.
Excellent
Just listened to this album after listening to Mike Harding's Interview with Jackie. Classic folk stories told in Jackie's beautiful, plaintive voice supported by instruments (particularly the accordian and piano) that compliment, rather than distract from, the underlying story-telling. Loved it!
