How can you go wrong?
Not to be confused with the Austrian drummer of the same name. Instead a hugely talented singer from Liverpool who started out in the 80's. The compilation draws on only a handful of studio albums mainly from; Scallywag Jaz, Little Moscow and The Lost Letter Z, although some tracks have been reworked from the original releases. The compilation contains a good sample of the beautifully crafted songs that show the quality in his voice and his song writing. Parallels are hard to draw probably because I find his voice instantly recognisable. Most of the tracks were produced between 1987 and 1991 and show off his vocal range and more importantly the emotional impact he gives to his songs. Many have a strong bass line with a Jazz style and the quality of the crafting that is so often lacking in mainstream music. Preview the tracks and see discover Thomas Lang for yourself
Pleased and disappointed
Scallwag Jazz is one of the best albums I have ever come across - and almost impossible to find nowadays. Thomas Lang's music is in a dead zone; highly valued and demanded by those who have had fortune to come across him, but not in sufficient demand for this to be re-issued, it seems. I am just glad I have managed to get a download, I've given up trying to find the CD for sensible money.
My disappointment comes in discovering that some of the tracks have been reworked - was this really necessary ??? The Happy Man is for me the signature track, and its not the same as the original album release.
Scallywag Jaz
Thomas Lang has the most beautiful voice, he was so underrated when he was in his prime, I still don't understand why Happy Man didn't make it to the top of the charts. I am so pleased to have come across his album Scallywag Jaz again, I still have it on vinyl but alas no record player that works! Some of the songs have been updated, I prefer the original versions but the album is still a joy to listen to and brings back fond memories from the 80s/90s.
