Dreary

Self indulgent bombastic and regrettable. Nothing more irritating than the sound of a mega-talent scratching the bottom of a barrel. Many have tried this sparse format but few have won. Unless you have particular need of a soundtrack for a cremation of someone you disliked then avoid at all costs. As a long time PG fan I am very disappointed with this album, his output is not high and therefore this was eagerly awaited. I was imagining a cross between 'Here comes the flood' and perhaps elements of some of his film scores in a contemporary way. What is actually delivered here is a funereal dirge rendition of not only his own songbook but that of others. There is little contrast in any of the arrangements and some are almost interchangeable, slowing down even the slowest original song to mind numbing tempo does not reveal the best of PG's voice. Some passages are sonically enhanced by the inclusion of PG warbling as if caught on mic in the gents toilet to bridge gaps in the song. Not necessary. In conclusion, if someone close to you has died recently and it has fallen unto you to make the inevitable funereal service tape, look elsewhere. Try Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now.

The genius of Gabriel

I really do not know how he does this; how Gabriel can stay so wonderfully unique and yet be so relevant and in tune with current music is amazing. This is simply a beautiful album that must surely be one of the albums of 2010. Yes, moody and a little sad but sheer genious. Mirrorball, My Body Is a Cage and The Book of love are my outstanding tracks already but i suspect I will find more with each listening ands love them all.

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
