Album Review

There's no denying that Second Coming is a bit of a letdown. None of the songs are quite as strong as the best on their debut, but there is plenty of good music on the band's much-delayed second record. The Stone Roses create a dense tapestry of interweaving guitars and pulsing bass grooves. Ian Brown growls a little more than before, but he isn't the center of the music; John Squire's endlessly colorful riffs are. It's clear that Squire has been listening to a bit of hard rock, particularly Led Zeppelin. While the songs occasionally take a back seat to the grooves, several tracks — "Ten Storey Love Song," "Begging You," "Tightrope," "How Do You Sleep," and "Love Spreads" — rank as true classics. It might not be the long-awaited masterpiece it was rumored to be, but Second Coming is a fine sophomore effort.

A masterpiece in modern times

I'm a little confused by the reviews on here. Reviewers on the one hand hand are criticising this album for not being as good as the first and then stating that well, after a few listens, it is actually a really good album. This is a follow up album equally as good as Oasis's second album. In fact I would say it is better. Over production? That's a fashionable thing to say. You cannot get over production on an album that sounds as good as this. It's produced to the highest of standards. That's why it sounds so incredible. I've never heard Ian Brown sound better. The lyrics are great and the instruments are clear and the drums are to die for on this album. I've never heard the band play such diverse songs any better. This album is their best album and always will be. If you like your guitars, drums and funk then you will never go wrong buying this album. I defy anyone not to move to this album be it in the car, on your headphones at work or simply listening to it at home....come on..... tell me i'm wrong....

'Second Coming' by The Stone Roses.

A must purchase for any fan of true music!! There is much disappointing reading about this legendary album out there at the moment, but this album lives up to all the hype, AND the album title all in one go. As someone who was at their Spike Island gig, this album is not only a continuation of the super work crafted on their 'Stone Roses' album, it far surpassed it in every way. Tracks such as 'Tightrope' would be at home in anybody's record collection, and classics such as 'Ten Story Love Song', 'How Do You Sleep' and 'Love Spreads' far surpass anything on their other albums. Tragically their last ever offering, this is in my opinion the greatest album released. Download it now!!!!!

A Classic...

... and unfairly maligned. The Second Coming is a great album by all standards; it's only problem was that it was the long-awaited and overdue follow-up to arguably the greatest debut album of all time: 'The Stone Roses'. Due to record company wranglings, music fans waited 5 long years for the follow-up; 'The Second Coming' is a great album pure and simple. It suffers because of the near mythical status bestowed on it's predecessor; but in comparison to any other album of the early to mid nineties it's a belter. Great riffs; catchy bass; relentless drums and Ian Brown's distinctive vocals over the top. 'The Second Coming' was one of the top 5 albums of the 90's; it's professed flaws are in fact red herrings - over-hyped expectation & comparison to arguably the best British album of the last 35 years in 'The Stone Roses'. 'The Second Coming' remains a must have in any collection

Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s dance beat, the Stone Roses defined the British guitar pop scene of the late '80s and early '90s. After their eponymous 1989 debut album became an English sensation, countless other groups in the same vein became popular, including the Charlatans UK, Inspiral Carpets, and Happy Mondays. However, the Stone Roses were never able to capitalize on the promise of their...
