The collective formed from Big Audio Dynamite weave Celtic influences into their heavy dub sound.

Not a duff track...

English traditional music and dub may seem an unlikely combination on this essentially overlooked masterpiece from the mid 1990s, but it works. The deep bass-driven soundscapes and crisp, multi-layered percussion will test your speakers; and there’s something quintessentially British about this album that falls into that rare category of music purchases as not having a duff track on it. (‘Little Britain’ was used by the BBC to advertise its schedules). Not really dance and not totally chill-out or ambient ‘Second Light’ is a collection of irresistible sound journeys. Still daisy-fresh despite the passage of time Dreadzone’s offering remains a heart-warming, understated blend of multi-ethnic traditions that makes you proud to be British.

Completely new to me.....will be looking out for these now!

Found them whilst browsing or fishing for new music to whet my large musical appetite, which has been allowed to grow and develop since the inception of iTunes. I am certainly glad I did come across this band. I like their mixture of reggae, fun, adventure and dance style music. Although this is classed as reggae, it most certainly is not and this genre labelling could put people off. In fact it would be hard to catalogue this music into anyone genre. In places the music, reminds me of Lemon Jelly; a two man band that add elements of sillyness and fun in a very professional style. They enjoy their music as does this band......fun, dancey, different and refreshing really. The Reggae tones can clearly be heard in several tracks, but don’t expect Bob Marley or Johnny Nash type sounds. The first track starts of with reggae style with intriging little melodies interspersed amongst the usual reggae beat. No hint of Reggae here....Little Britain is a really catchy dancey type tune with an apt title, with those two ( comedy???) baffoons making a show with the same name!!!! Possibly my best track. A Canturbury Tale, small medieval intro with a gentle lead into the body of the song. A good mixture of modern and slightly classical style music...mixed with a female vocalist with an angelic voice....with a hint of carribean drums and the tinkering of a piano....an excellent track which you could not possibly judge by the small piece you are allowed to hear from iTunes. Captain Dread, reminds me of Captain Bird’s Eye! with a catchy nautical jig sound and navy style of music. Cave of Angels, another Lemon Jelly style track remined me of His Majesty King Raam King Ram, a nice track to sooth yourself to with a hint of humour! Zion Truth, One Way for you Reggae fans has a typical Reggae beat.......except for the strong female vocalist, they reminded me, in places, of UB 40, who produced a British Reggae sound, many years ago, mixed with a ‘dance’ style of musical rythm. Shining Path, reggae, electro, Lemon Jelly style music and speech, drums, ambient, piano, a quite pleasant mixture of styles and genres. Out of heaven, is a much slower piano piece of music with harmony + male vocalists.

AHOY SHIPMATES...DREADZONE APPROACHING...

Dreadzone fuse together the basic elements of dub/reggae & dance. The result is a real tasty dish. If you fancy chilling out or bopping round the lounge, this is for you. From the early single "CAPTAIN DREAD" one gets the message that having a jolly good time is in order. The beauty of "CANTERBURY TALE" does it for me, showing Dreadzone have so much variety on offer. Set sail, Cast off & enjoy the ride...

Biography

Formed: 1993 in London, England

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '90s

The British dance group Dreadzone rose from the remnants of the short-lived Screaming Target, itself an outgrowth of Big Audio Dynamite. Screaming Target comprised Don Letts, Greg Roberts and Leo Williams, in collaboration with producer and remixer Tim Bran; when Letts exited, Bran signed on with the team of Roberts and Williams, and the trio rechristened themselves Dreadzone. A dub band relying heavily on sampling and other elements of electronica, they debuted in 1993 with the LP 360°. Two years...
