An Eccentric Masterpiece
If you want music to sit down and really listen to, this is the album for you. It is rich, melodic and complex - and at times takes on a dreamy quality. Peter Gabriel's lyrics are occasionally surreal (try understanding I Know What I Like) Steve Hackett's guitar work is truly beautiful at times. You also discover why Phil Collins was one of the finest drummers of his generation. From the opening lines to the final fade this is an album that has stood the test of time.
Quitessentially English
Selling England is a beautifully realised album.Arguably Genesis finest , though the Lamb has an edge and sinister feel that is also very compelling, Selling England wins for me as it showcases perfectly the bands multiple talents,as they matured together as a songwriting unit. Hacketts wonderfully expressive guitar work , Gabriels superb grasp of melody , playful and humorous lyrics.A lovely pastoral feel to the album overall. The production is teriffic too.Definitely of an era,but stands the test of time.A must have album for anyone one with Prog leanings and an ear for well crafted songs and top notch musicianship.
Simply stunning
This album came as more than I expected. Not only does it tell a story, as was the apparent fashion among British artists in the 70's and 80's, but it also has a song to fit any mood. Whether your travelling down the motorway, or sitting in a room whilst doing some reflective thinking/writing, you will not want to give this a miss! I highly doubt there is a party out there who will not feel reach them on some plain.
