Album Review

Enigma mastermind Michael Crétu took a self-described "omnicultural" approach to his seventh release under the moniker, and while that progressive, pioneering notion looks good on paper, any sharp stylistic changes to the project's signature sound on Seven Lives Many Faces are subtle, to say the least. Once again, Crétu seamlessly blends ethnic fusion, new age, and neo-classical electronica into the perfect background music for a European tourism campaign commercial, peppering each track with his seemingly endless arsenal of samples, both new and old. When Enigma strikes a balance between the two worlds, as is the case on the elegant (and surprisingly muscular) first single "Seven Lives" and its spiritual and melodic counterpart "La Puerta del Cielo" (the latter most resembles the band's most notable hit, "Sadeness, Pt. 1") the results are quietly stunning, but in more cases than not, the new age, fortune-cookie derived lyrics (especially when sung in English) mirror the unimaginative, two-chord melodies that carry them along.

Enigma Reborn

Having Listened to this album, it made me remember what it felt like when i first listended to Enigma 1-3. Some might say that this album is rehashing the same sounds of the previous albums. I dont believe this to be true. While i do feel the same emotions, the sounds and music compositions are totally unique. I recommend this CD to all enigma fans.

more unsurpassed BRILLIANCE

Those who continually criticise a new release- yet again JUST DONT GET ENIGMA and what it is all about. The guy who says its all the same as previous Enigma Albums. Hello!!!- all the previous Albums were SO different you clearly are a novice. Then the other extreme the guy who says its just too "Garage" for him, same comments were made on Voyageur. This is the sound of Enigma its not a one stop Party track or an Ibiza chill sound- love it or hate it. Its a journey that needs to be taken and listened over and over again. It took me 4 years before I fell into the trap of the last two Albums. A Posteriori and Voyageur. Now i cant get enough of them. Every Enigma Album is different in its own Brilliance and still i find nuances and surprises when i listen again even back on MCMXC AD. Coming on here and criticising within days of its release YOU CLEARLY DONT GET ENIGMA. Go back and emerse yourself, if you still dont get it move on to another genre and leave the dedicated Enigmatics to enjoy. There is nothing the same here. I thought we would hear no more from Cretu, this is a great surprise and I think its FANTASTIC.

Seventh Time Round, Still As Good As The First

The third album using the new Cretu recording studio "the Alchemist" is the best. Voyageur, A Posteroi and now Seven Lives, is just packed full of tracks that will make you drift away into deep relaxtion, and will hit you with flash backs fromthe previous Enigma back catalogue. DONT NOT read some of the reviews on here that will say its same as the other as it clearly isnt, theres the odd sample used from previous Enigma albums but that ties in with the album titleand theme. ITS BRILLIANT

Biography

Formed: 1990 in Ibiza, Spain

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

With their 1991 hit "Sadeness," Enigma brought the new age fascination with Gregorian chants and old-world culture to the clubs; the resulting single was both unique and irresistible. The rest of the album followed that pattern successfully, although without quite matching the stunning success of the hit single. On their second album, 1994's Cross of Changes, some of the old-world elements remained, but the new age angle came to the forefront in a set of slick, radio-friendly dance-pop. Enigma 3:...
