iTunes Review

After the glam/dance hybrid that was 2005's Supernature, Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree feels like the ideal album for the morning after. Beginning with the gentle, pastoral finger-picked acoustic sounds of "Clowns," the album glides through ambient electronic textures with a heavy focus on Alison Goldfrapp's warm whispers. Songs such as "Happiness" pick up the pace a bit, drawing from joyous '70s piano pop. Like a cosmic fusion of Air and Kate Bush, Goldfrapp prove that they can conjure up a bucolic future just as well as they can fill up the dance floor.

Customer Reviews

Hmmmm.

I think I must be out of step. I know I am. ‘Q’, Mojo and the Guardian all rated this album, though all interestingly used adjectives such as whimsy, folksy, psychedelic and the dreaded word ‘70’s’ in their reviews. All alluded to a change in direction with echoes back to Felt Mountain and Black Cherry. All seemingly well and good then, for after Felt Mountain, I have found Goldfrapp a less appealing prospect. Supernature was fantastic, but it wasn’t the Goldfrapp of old. I was very excited. Note the past tense. I’m now a little disappointed. The album lacks emotional variation for me, it is very, well, wallpaper: there in the background but nothing really to take any notice of. Goldfrapp’s breathless whisper is a little cloying after track three and the instrumentation is kitsch. This is ersatz Goldfrapp, a created world which in being so personal alienates me as a listener. They might be having a wonderful time, I’m not. With the exception of the misleading A&E, I can’t honestly say I could remember a single phrase or sequence after a few listenings. Still, it is Goldfrapp, and I will listen to it again and again. It will, I know, insinuate itself into my psyche and I will regret my rating and revise my opinion. Probably. Hopefully. A friend of mine told me that if you don’t like the taste of something, your body will get used to it after twelve tastes: sprouts, alcohol, cigarettes. Sorry. ‘Eat Yourself’ is playing. Now what is that all about…[!] I know now I couldn’t taste it twelve times. Sorry. Mediocre.

Let It Wash Over You

Pour yourself a glass of wine. Put on your cashmere socks. Lay back and let the sumptous lyrics and soaring melodies wash over you. This is a truly beautiful album - don't get put off by the reviews saying it's folk music. I don't care for folk music but I LOVE this album. It will haunt you....but in a good way!!

Seventh Tree Like Seventh Heaven

An exciting sound, with a beautiful blend of folk and vocal performance. Goldfrapp always seem to expand our music collection and what a hit they should have with this record. A&E is a good start to what is ultimately going to be hit after hit, cant wait to see them play this record live.
