She WOW!

Shakira is Back, YAY! What a Brilliant album from Shakira, have loved the leading single for a while and the album is full of tracks up to the same standard. Tracks Men in This Town and Why Wait are AMAZING, Did it Again is a beautiful track, it's my favourite on the album, I hope it will chart very high, it really deserves to. A fantastic album from a very talented lady.

What on earth is this...?

I was, frankly, astonished when I listened to this album through for the first time.

I came to Shakira from Laundry Service and the OFs, then fell for her Spanish stuff. Now...what's this all about? For a start, it's at about twice the pace of any of her earlier work. Perhaps it's just exuberance at having mastered English so well. The songs are very much oriented towards the dance market; a lot of them sound as though they are designed to be mixed in rather than listened to on an album. They are also generally shorter than on previous albums; mostly at under 3:30 rather than up around 4:00. Further, a third of the album is repetition; surely there's no need to have She-Wolf on here 4 times? And on top of all this, there's a lot of electronic music and pumping beat, not much of the guitars and such that Shakira has used before.

I actually thought I might have wasted my money when I listened to this album the first couple of times, but after having persevered I can say that it's worth the effort. Shakira's voice is as enjoyably distinctive as ever and the songs are definitely catchy. Personally, I hope it's not a sign of things to come but it's good to hear an artist trying something new, particularly one with as broad a talent as this.

In summary, I'd give it 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up. If you're a fan of Shakira already, then give it some time and you'll find it's not your favourite album but there are some good tunes on here. If you're new to the lady, then don't expect anything else in her back catalogue to be remotely similar to this.

Biography

Born: 02 February 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a female artist; she wrote or co-wrote nearly all of her own material, and in the process gained a reputation as one of Latin music's most ambitiously poetic lyricists. When she released her first English...
