Carmilla has bite!
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's classsic horror tale might not be as popular as Dracula, but it is Carmilla that is probably the origin of the popular culture stuff that is associated with female Vampires these days. Also, it is fairly obvious when listening to this tale that Bram Stoker was clearly influenced by Carmilla when writing his own gothic horror masterpiece.
As with all of the Textbook Stuff spoken word releases, it is the reader that brings the written word to life, and with Miriam Margolyes' excellent range of voices (even Miriam's male voices are convincing males!), Carmilla absolutely lives in this presentation. Every voice that Miriam does is just right for the respective characters in this story, and nothing is too confusing or OTT. Miriam's reading coupled with the evocative - but unintrusive - background music and effects make this audio version of Carmilla a real treat to listen to.
Once Carmilla grabs you, you are in for the duration! With over three hours of listening, this Textbook Stuff version of Carmilla is a brilliant production that I can heartily recommend to anybody interested in classic gothic horror stories.
