Album Review
Phelps' third album is an accomplished serving of country blues that combines the sweet and sour power of his guitar playing with the equally bittersweet charge of Phelps' wearied voice. Shine Eyed Mister Zen features a lot of singing, but most importantly it spotlights the singing of Phelps' slide guitar, which integrates a humid and natural style that invokes the mystery and religion that these mostly original songs lean toward. The dusty delta Phelps conjures here is at once familiar and nostalgic; it's to his credit that Phelps is able to add his own voice to the spiritual mix. A mystical and unaffected recording.

Why this is amazing music:
Everybody knows that without Blues, popular music as we know it wouldn't have come as far as it has. But what place has this most antiquated of popular music arrived at these days? Kelly Joe Phelps is the answer to a question that is often misdirected. Blues at it's most raw could be described as the sound a man or woman makes when lifes' hardships, both physical and existential, moves them to place their fingers upon an instrument, open their vocal chords and let all of it spill out. The result has always been an intoxicating mixture of melancholy and hope. Blues is both. Blues is now. Blues IS Kelly Joe Phelps.
A rare treat for the listener
Sublime - The skill in relaying these stories is in the deft touch of the raconteur and Kelly Joe is a great storyteller. The darkness of 'Katy' holds the listener transfixed until the inevitable ending. 'Wandering Away' quietly exposes the need to keep moving on. 'Goodnight Irene' is a soft and gentle rendition of a well-known song, albeit set to an unfamiliar tune. It is, in my opinion, one of the very best versions of this standard, to be heard anywhere. 'Dock Boggs Country Blues' shows Kelly Joe's mastery of the guitar. All of the songs on this album are a beguiling mix of beautifully told complex tales, interwoven with the skill, dexterity and integrity of Kelly Joe's playing, combined with his distinctive voice. Fans of the blues and of Kelly Joe will not want to miss this one.
