iTunes Review
Executive-produced by John Legend, Estelle's sophomore album Shine brings together the best and brightest from Legend’s circle. Kanye West delivers “American Boy”, a slice of modern disco that is perfect backdrop for the song’s cross-continental romance, while Wyclef Jean and Mark Ronson, bring to the table a global sensibility well-suited to Estelle, a West Londoner with a mom from Senegal and a dad from Grenanda. Jean’s tracks, “No Substitute Love” and “So Much Out of the Way”, are hypnotic and heavy, his best productions in years; Ronson, on the other hand, comes through with “Magnificent”, a raw funk beat infused with Jamaican flavor. Of course, these producers are only as good as their singer, and Estelle is completely self-possessed and stylish. In league with other contemporary British sirens like Amy Winehouse and Nicole Willis, Estelle is soulful but not stereotypical, charming but not cutesy. She represents something fiercely current yet utterly timeless and her Shine is a true rarity: a mainstream female pop album that is as sophisticated as it is fresh.
Customer Reviews
What a comback!!!
Estelle has finally released her follow up to the critically acclaimed "The 18th Day". "Shine" is an amazing album and i'm going to do a song by song review!!! Wait A Mitute (Just a Touch) - This was the lead single from the album, and flopped, which was a crime!!! Great production from Will.I.Am who also offers catchy guest vocals. Great mix of rapping in the verses and singing in the chorus 10/10 No Substitute Love - Great song produced by Wycelf Jean...shows how Estelle can switch from rapping to singing easily 10/10 American Boy - We all know this, great song, fantastic production by Will.I.Am and featuring Kanye West. Doesn't really fit with the album, but an amazing track 10/10 More Than Friends - The albums first ballad, great song. Nice lyrics with a great rap from Estelle, where she says "i'm not a ho, i'm so much more" 9/10 Magnificent - Reggae influenced song, produced my Mark Ronson, great feel good summer song. 10/10 Come Over - Carrying on the reggae influence...Come over is not as catchy as Magnificent but it is a nice song 8/10 So Much Out The Way - Great uptempo, the verses and the chorus sound like two different songs but it's a nice song produced by Wyclef Jean and probably the track most remeniscent of Lauryn Hill 10/10 In The Rain - In The Rain is the album's standout, great R&B midtempo...where Estelle likens her love with her partner like the British summer where it rains 10/10 Back In Love - The quality of the album declines on this song...a bit boring 7/10 You Are - A duet with John Legend it is a nice ballad, John sounds amazing as usual. I prefer Hey Girl more though (their duet of The 18th Day) 8/10 Pretty Please - Another standout track, sounds very motown, Supremes style, great vocals from Estelle and Cee-Lo...has to be a future single!!! The most uptempo song on the album!!! 10/10 Shine - The lyrics sound like a follow up to Estelle's previous hit "1980". Fantastic song with great lyrics...should be 3rd single after In The Rain 10/10
Definitely her time...
