iTunes Review

Babyshambles’ Pete Doherty has lived the rock star life — drug troubles, model dating — and his penchant for nicking classic rock riffs is as adept as his haircuts for maintaining the rock standard. However, anyone expecting the manic energy of his earlier group, the Libertines, will be shocked to hear such light-hearted convention. “Deliver” may swipe the two chord punch of the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” but it does so with a stylish preen towards pop radio. “You Talk” chats up with a deliberate brattiness but it’s all within the framework of an even-keeled, swaying rhythm that never cuts too sharp an edge. For that you have to wait for the snotty conniption fit that fuels the chorus of “Side of the Road.” In a sign of perversity, Doherty does put two of the album’s best cuts at album’s end. “Deft Left Hand” channels the same Kinks-to-Clash powerchords but with a personal mission of vaguely addressing his past, while “Lost Art of Murder” adds British folk guitarist Bert Jansch for an unexpectedly quiet finale.

Customer Reviews

Just might change your (and their) mind.

Babyshambles need have absolutely no introduction. There’s enough of a buzz around them that I can gleefully skip past Doherty’s colourful personal life and get straight onto the record. For Babyshambles, Shotter’s Nation is unfamiliar but welcome ground; tight hooks, good backing by Drew McConnall, Mik Whitnall and Adam Fieck abound. With them and Steven Street onboard, keep the quality to an absolute maximum. ‘Delivery’ just about summarizes Doherty’s message: ‘I’m f****d, forlorn, frozen beneath the summer’, ‘what use am I to anyone?’ Geez, this guy can ramble on a bit. Luckily, this renewed sense of musicality not seen since the Libertines overshadows any lyrical problems. Things are ever improving throughout, via Mik Whitnall’s excellent contribution to ‘Carry on Up the Morning’, ‘UnBiloTitled’, the first single ‘Delivery’ and its menacing duelling guitar intro, and ‘Lost Art of Murder’, the album highlight, most haunting closer of the year, and lyrically and musically the best of Doherty’s career. Like most great albums, you can’t get through ‘Shotter’s Nation’ in one sitting, but it’s ingenuitive in that the fun comes from picking out your favourites, then discovering something new and doing it again. These four stars will stand from raw impression, rather than sympathy. Download: Carry on Up the Morning, UnBiloTitled, Delivery, Deft Left Hand, Lost Art of Murder

A frighteningly good Album

Put aside every pre-conception of Pete Doherty you have and buy this. Make no mistake - this is the sort of Album that will looked back on as a classic for years to come. Lets hope Pete is around to bathe in its glory.

surprised and delighted

having bought everything doherty has ever done, i believe this to be the apex of his work post libertines. this album is a world away from the shambles that was "Down In Albion" with well stuctured pleasant sounding tunes acompanied with doherty's usual wit. Go smoke crack, he croons on the lost art of murder, so pete still has a sense of humour. If like me, you became disillusioned with pete doeherty after his numerous arrests and a dissapointing first album, buy this, it will revive your impressions of one of the greatest artists in british music. stand out track is delivery. if you like this buy the blinding ep and janie jones the single.

Biography

Formed: 2004

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Formed in spring 2004, just as the Libertines were beginning to fall apart, Babyshambles became the main vessel for Pete Doherty's poetic, chaotic rock when he was ousted from the Libertines for his increasing drug use and erratic behavior. Babyshambles released their self-titled debut 7" in April 2004, and settled on the lineup of Doherty, guitarist Patrick Walden, bassist Drew McConnell, and drummer Gemma Clarke by that summer. That fall, things went relatively smoothly for the band, with a sold-out...
