Album Review

The first Cross album was really a Roger Taylor solo project in all but name. Taylor played almost all the instruments on Shove It and wrote the music as well, which veered toward a fusion of hard rock and dance influences. Unfortunately, the drum programming sounds very cheap and the whole project sounds quite rushed with thin instrumentation and basic synth lines. While great lyrics were never Taylor's specialty, those featured on the album are quite poor ("VIP's and royalty get treated like they're special see/But the trick is there for all to see/They're people just like you and me"). The high points on the album occur when Taylor's bandmates from Queen show up. Freddie Mercury puts in a moving performance on the best track here, "Heaven for Everyone," while Brian May does a guest solo on the rambunctious "Love Lies Bleeding." [Note: In the U.S. the track order was shuffled and a new song, "Feel the Force," was added. "Heaven for Everyone" was later re-recorded with the same vocal track for the Queen album Made in Heaven.]

Customer Reviews

solid album - but the official itunes review?

This is a solid Taylor album which brings back some fond memories of my childhood and starting to learn guitar. While the song writing is a little patchy in places, as a solo effort to get away from the QUEEN machine it still holds up in a reasonably good light - many years later.

For those interested enough it is worth pointing out that the official itunes review of this album is incorrect. The Cross was a genuine band and did not feature Taylor playing 'everything'. Talented musicians Spike Edney, Josh McCrae and Clayton Moss rounded up the lineup and Brian May made a very welcome appearance on "Love Lies Bleeding". OBviously Freddie Mercury is easily spotted on the 'original' version of Heaven For Everyone, which later made an appearance on the last Queen album, in a remixed/recorded state. For many however the original version of the song featured on this album is rawer and more listenable.

feel the force

when this album was released i thought it was pretty good...different to say the least...i was lucky enough to get the us lp and found an extra track which sadly is not included with this release nor are any b.sides or non album tracks that rt fans crave for...so this loses astar for no extra value...why should a queen fan buy it when we cant get the rare stuff as well...stand out tracks is still heaven for everyone and rough justice

Shove It!!

I had this on tape years ago and lost it along the way, what a fab album, the title track is one that yo cant help but like!! Makes me smile every time!
