Album Review

The musical touchstone for the British trio Muse is obviously Radiohead and that fact is crystal clear from the smoldering opening cut, "Sunburn." Their John Leckie-produced debut, Showbiz, is strong on angst-filled vocals, esoteric lyrics, and dramatic shifts in sonic dynamics. Hailing from rural England, singer/guitarist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard average 20 years of age, so there's plenty of potential for them to grow into a sound that is more of their own. In the meantime, Bellamy does an impressive job of aping the quirky, nervous vocal tic of Thom Yorke on songs like the mid-tempo, Mellotron-driven "Muscle Museum," and he cuts loose vocally on the soaring "Cave" and on the lovely, mournful ballad "Unintended." Showbiz hints at the potential in this young band, and it should be of interest to many Radiohead fans.

Showbiz

I have been trying to get hold of Spiral Static for a long time and now i can have it, thank you. This is still as good as the first time i heard it several years ago. Songs like Showbiz, Muscle Museum, Cave and Sunburn are just as epic as New Born, Knights of Cydonia and Hysteria. If you are a Muse fan than you should own this already and if you are a rock fan then have a listen. Muse make incredible albums and this is no different. My Favourite songs from the album are Showbiz, Muscle Museum, Cave, Spiral Static, Sunburn and Unintended. Sunburn - 9/10 Muscle Museum - 10/10 Fillip - 8/10 Falling Down - 4/10 Cave - 9/10 Showbiz - 10/10 Unintended - 9/10 Uno - 7/10 Sober - 7/10 Escape - 8/10 Overdue - 6/10 Hate This and I'll Love You - 5/10 Spiral Static - 9/10

Muse Album Reviewer

Having read through some of the muse reviews I have decided that whoever is reviewing their albums, needs to get of his/her high horse about Radiohead. It's one thing to make a comment or citation, but a completely different thing to write review after review with little else other than this one comparison, digested again and again. Yes, I can see the comparison, but Muse have a proven track record and a fantastic back catalogue. Move on and give us some insight into a fantastic group or please don't bother to write any more.

Their best album by far!

I owned every single song by Muse (including the ones on the EP's) apart from this album. I went to see them in Sheffield in November 09 and they were outstanding although they played one song I hadn't heard before (Unintended). So I asked my brother after the gig what album the song was from and was prompted to purchase Showbiz. Best decision EVER. Unintended is a truly deep and beautiful song and then there's more up beat songs such as Sunburn and Cave. Must have album for all Muse fans and people who are just starting to listen to them.

10/10!

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Muse's fusion of progressive rock, glam, electronica, and Radiohead-influenced experimentation is crafted by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard. Bored by the sleepy life provided by their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon, the three British friends began playing music together. They started the first incarnation of their band while only 13 years old, changing the name of the group from Gothic Plague to Fixed Penalty to Rocket Baby Dolls as time...
