Album Review

Jeff Buckley was a mess of contradictions: a perfectionist who believed in spontaneity, a man who was at once humble and vain, a musician who shunned his father's tumultuous legacy while creating one of his own. These are some of the reasons why he took his time writing and recording the material for his second album, laboring over many songs for months at a time. Given such painstaking methods, it shouldn't have been a surprise that recording was an equally fastidious process. Buckley recorded enough material for an album with producer Tom Verlaine, but deciding that the results weren't quite right, he scrapped them and moved to Memphis to record the album again. He reworked a few songs as home demos as he prepared to cut the album, but it was never made — Buckley died in a tragic drowning accident before entering the studio. As a way to enlarge his legacy, his mother and record label rounded up the majority of the existing unreleased recordings, releasing them as the double-disc set Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk. Excepting a few awkward moments and middle-eights, it's hard to see why Buckley rejected the Verlaine productions that make up disc one. The material isn't necessarily a progression from Grace; it's more like a stripped-down, edgier take on the sweeping, jazz-tinged goth folk-rock that made the first album so distinctive. Neither the nearly finished first disc nor the homemade demos and re-recordings on the second disc offer any revelations, but that's not necessarily a disappointment. Sketches adds several wonderful songs to his catalog, offering further proof of his immense talent. And that, of course, is what makes the album as sad as it is exciting.

AN ESSENTIAL ALBUM FOR EVERYONE

This album shows a completely new side of jeff buckley, a more honest and pure representation with less over dubbing and insanely beautiful. From 'everybody here wants you' and its beautiful meaningful lyrics to the slightly ironic 'nightmares by the sea' this album is what jeff buckley is all about. a masterpeice

Buy It !!

This album is really good, doesn't quite live up to Grace, nothing will, but never the less it is different and it is still really worth buying!!! Although these are sketches it does show what an amazing album it would have been and definately shows Jeff's incredible talent. Personal favourites are 'You and I' and ' New Years Prayer' at the moment however all the others are also brilliant! Definately worth getting for present fans and newcomers.

Not Grace...But it dosn't have to be...

Released after the tragic drowning accident of Jeff this album takes on a life of it's own which may have been quite different may he have still been with us today. 'Sketches' is a glorious collection of soulful, stripped, touching numbers that while not quite fitting as a cohiesive unit, flurish beautifully on there own. From the crunching opener 'Sky is a Landfill' to the slightly gothic tinged 'Nightmares by the Sea' every track has a life of it's own. There being the problem (and none to surprising surrounding the circumstances of it's creation and release) It starts of wonderfully but towards the end of the album falters ('Morning Theft and You & I' never truely reaching the effect they should have had. But nevertheless this album is still pure gold and any self-respecting Buckley fan should have this in there collection, casual fans may have to listen a little harder...but the reward is beautiful.

Biography

Born: 17 November 1966 in Orange County, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that Jeff Buckley's music was related to his father's by only the thinnest of margins. Buckley's voice was grand and...
