Album Review

Skybound, the second album by London’s Tom Baxter, reveals the singer/songwriter to be as mellow as a latter-day James Taylor. However, he clearly wishes to be taken seriously as an artist along the lines of Jeff Buckley, and so there is a certain earnestness to much of Skybound that keeps Baxter from writing sure-fire chart-toppers like John Mayer's "Daughters" or any of Sting’s solo hits. Indeed, sometimes it seems that he has learned the lessons of his influences a little too well: The first single, "Better," is so tasteful, from the just-so cracks in Baxter's voice to the deliberate build of the arrangement, that it verges on predictable. For every moment like that, however, Skybound offers another filled with genuine artistry. The opening "Night Like This," for example, dabbles in some atmospheric keyboard fills that wouldn't sound out of place on an Air album, and "Tell Her Today" flirts with Brazilian rhythms and a slurred whisper of a vocal akin to Nick Drake.

If this guy doesn't make it big...

Tom is a hugely talented man and this album proves that the has the quality of a mega-star! Me and my family got Tom's first album nearly four years ago, and we have seen him about 5 times on all his tours (soon to be 6 when he tours again and comes to the north-west on the 9th March!) The album has hits after hits, and it is one of those albums which you don't get tired of hearing!!! We got it way back last July, and have listened to it ever since! All we can hope now is that Tom and his band including Charlie (who has got a cracking album as well!) can make it big, and hit the "big time"! He's been played on Radio 2 on numerous occasions, so keep an ear open for him! O... and by the way if you have heard his new single "Better" and thought that was good... get the new album because there are several tracks on there that are better than that one!! Good luck Tom!

Truly Amazing Album

This is a truly amazing album. Each song is both haunting and soulful. My favourite had to be 'Skybound' or 'The Last Shot'. But this is definitely one of those albums which you can just put on and leave to the end. A real British talent and one to keep an eye on. I've been a fan of Tom's for about a year and a half now so it's really great to see him get his dues. The only thing better than listening to the album is hearing it live so I cant wait until he tours again. Well done Tom, keep it coming!

Tom truly is Skybound

Including many styles, for instance a blues-tinged opening number, Night Like This, to the flamenco-infused Icarus Wings, this album has shows Tom to be an accomplished singer/songwriter/guitarist. From the unbridled happiness of Better to the depths of despair in Half A Man, this album reminds us of exactly why we need songwriters who pour their soul into every word: quite simply, he articulates the emotions we all feel but don't have the skill to express. Although not as immediate as Feather & Stone, his first cd, this album grows and grows. There's a song for every mood, songs to lift you up, songs to make you realise that the bad times - although real - aren't permanent, and songs to move your feet! There isn't a weak song on this album but one word of warning, don't buy another album at the same time as this: the other album will never get a look-in. If you're lucky enough to get tickets to see Tom 'live', go go go! The guys voice will blow you away!
