Customer Reviews
Snow is an album that will never thaw.
As an avid fan of prog rock giants such as Yes, Genesis and ELP, I stumbled across Spock's Beard a couple of years back. Now I have all of their albums and sitting at the very top of the pile for me is Snow, Neal Morse's masterpiece of a swansong. This very happily compares to the best concept albums I know and is easily my favourite purchase of the last 10 years, no , make that 20. It is one of those CDs that I never tire of listening to. An exceptionally strong opening, powerful melodies, beautiful arrangements, memorable and emotive lyrics, (Wind at My Back always sends shivers down the spine) and superb instrumentation all add up to an album that all serious fans of progressive rock music should listen to before they die.
Another Stunning Introduction.
Spock's Beard? They came to me as recommended for you by Itunes. Am I glad they were. I grew up with Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP. and the experts tell me this prog rock is now dead in the modern world. BUT. This album is stunning! Every one should listen to this. It is an amazing piece of compsition and production. The music soars throughout. It has not been out of my Car CD since I burned it. worth every penny. Thanks I tunes for the intoduction.
Breathtaking Musical Narrative
Having Listened to Dream Theatre for years and becoming more and more interested in a wider range of prog-rock I finally paid attention to a friend of mine badgering me to listen to this album…. I both love and hate him for this. This is because Snow quickly became one of my all time favourite albums to the point I have wasted hours listening rather than working.
To me this album has two major attractions. Firstly, much of my enjoyment from music comes from repeat listening, trying to pick out the more intricate parts rather than just skimming the surface with the main melody and lyrics. This album certainly rewards this approach; pieces can become so intricate that you can listen for any number of intermingling harmonies or melodies at a time, especially in the vocal harmonies of “Long time suffering” or “Devils got my throat”. At the same time though the well thought out lyrics and main melodies mean I don’t always have to be listening like this to enjoy them.
The second reason I love this album is that, as my title suggests, this is a narrative work. It tells a tale, giving it structure and purpose rather than being a disjoint collection of ideas. Be warned though, listening to this on shuffle is akin to reading chapters of a novel in a random order: it won’t flow together, you won’t understand it so well and you certainly won’t enjoy it as much. In fact I would almost suggest not buying it from iTunes just because “Long time suffering” is currently missing but that may just be me being biased, as it is my favourite track.
