Album Review

Hanson delivered their second album in remarkably quick fashion, releasing Snowed In a mere six months after Middle of Nowhere. Granted, Snowed In was a Christmas album, but its speedy conception, recording and release shows how market-savvy Hanson and their management are. For a rushed effort, it's not half bad, containing some real charm and a smart selection of songs, but without hip producers like the Dust Brothers and Danny Saber on board, the record sounds more conventional than before, playing up their classic rock tendencies to the hilt. As a result, Snowed In is entertaining, but it suggests that the group may find themselves running out of ideas a little faster than Middle of Nowhere suggested.

Customer Reviews

Very well produced and a lot of fun!

Although "Snowed In" was obviously released to cash-in on the commercial success that Hanson had in 1997, it is nevertheless a fun Christmas album with well produced cover versions and some of the band’s own original songs. The choice of covers is refreshing, and (in 1997) introduced me to some tracks that I was not familiar with. This is also the first album where Taylor Hanson’s newly matured vocals can be heard, particularly on “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”. It is worth hearing the whole album, but particular highlights include Hanson’s own version of The Beach Boys' “Little Saint Nick” and self-penned track ‘Everybody Knows the Claus’, where Hanson warn us not to mess with Santa!

Formed: 1992 in Tulsa, OK

Sounding like a revamped Jackson 5 for the '90s, Hanson came storming out of Tulsa, OK, in 1997, blessed with photogenic looks and a surprisingly infectious sense of melody. Hanson had a sunny pop sense that stood in direct contrast to the gloomy grunge that had dominated the first half of the '90s, yet they also arrived with hip credentials — a handful of the cuts on their debut were produced by the Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys, Beck, Sukia), and the rest were produced by Steve Lironi, who...
