iTunes Review

Few albums in 2008 attempt the sonic grandeur pulled off by upstate NY’s Mercury Rev on Snowflake Midnight. It’s an ambitious maelstrom of production flourishes, instrumental dares, and melodic wanderings where the tunes flow and often interrupt themselves to find new footing. “People Are So Unpredictable” feasts on ambient, haunting tones and rhythmless moments of pastoral reflection, threatening to breakout for the cathartic moment, but mostly marinating in a psychedelic haze of ghostly voices and sci-fi soundtrack incidentals. Obviously influenced by Pink Floyd, the ‘70s German Krautrock movement, and the Flaming Lips (with whom Rev leader Jonathan Donahue was once a member), Mercury Rev rekindle the lost art and magic of improvisational and experimental rock where the overall concept trumps the individual moment. “October Sunshine” works as ominous New Age and continues into “Runaway Raindrop”. “Butterfly’s Wing” veers near the pop song. “Dream of a Young Girl as a Flower” treads eight minutes of luminous ground, immersing itself in instrumental chaos. This trio has the unusual power of an orchestra within its grasp.

Astonishing

I recently saw Mercury rev play some of these new songs at the End of the Road festival and they were indeed astonishing as is this new album which goes beyond Deserter's Songs to be their best album of all time.

Breathtaking stuff!

After the slight disappointment of 'Secret Migration' (good, but not as good as its two predecessors) I slipped Snowflake Midnight on with a little trepidation. The first thing that struck me was that the whole sound was very different - much more synth-based, sometimes ambient, sometimes even dancey (is that a word?) and yet still recognisably Rev. It has more in common with their recent instrumental output than the last three conventional albums - the Hello Blackbird soundtrack and the free download Strange Attractor that they've just released. But is it any good? I guess the star rating will have given that away - I think it's tremendous! The sound is lush, sweeping, often surprising and always interesting. Standouts on the first few plays are the single, Senses on Fire, which has a really driving urgency about it, and the haunting Faraway from Cars. But there's so much in just about every track I'm sure I will change my mind soon. Can't wait to see them live next month!

Back to best form - and beyond

Agree with Charliett above - was also at End of the Road and was blown away, especially by new songs, best Rev gig in Years. Now this album is definitely up there with Deserters Songs, but in some ways even better as it draws on some of the earlier, more way out Rev stuff like Boces and SYOTOS. After being a bit disappointed with Secret Migration, this is a fantastic return to form, an amazing, jaw dropping album, unlike anything else you will hear. For me the album of 2008 without a doubt. Just Buy it now!!!

Biography

Formed: Buffalo, NY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Not so much a band as a long, strange trip, the chaotic avant pop pranksters Mercury Rev formed in Buffalo, NY, in the late '80s. Originally comprised of vocalist David Baker, vocalist/silver pickup guitarist Jonathan Donahue, guitar shaper/single-exhaust clarinetist Grasshopper (born Sean Mackowiak), rooster-tail bass flutist Suzanne Thorpe, bass explorer Dave Fridmann, and mojo stick drummer Jimy Chambers, the sextet — always rife with personality conflicts — interacted with one another...
