Album Review

On the first ("Jump Blues") and the fifth ("Technicalelectronicsupersonicrobot [T.E.S.S.]") tracks of their second EP, Solar Power Struggle!, with keyboardist Brett Moses providing danceable synthesizer patterns, the Frontier Brothers from Austin, TX, sound like a band whose members have spent a lot of time listening to 1980s synth pop groups like Depeche Mode and the Cure. In between, with Moses sticking to piano, they display more the sound of another trio, the Ben Folds Five. In either case, singer Marshall Galactic indulges the band's fancy for science fiction imagery as he sings in a voice that sounds like the Cure's Robert Smith with laryngitis. The Frontier Brothers transcend their influences largely through their evident enthusiasm, which makes them sound like a good bet as a live act.
