iTunes Review
Well, well, well, who put the happy pills in David Gahan's Count Chocula this morning? While Some Great Reward is occasionally shielded from the sun by a God-fearing, teenage suicide track ("Blasphemous Rumours") and a flash frozen breakup ballad ("It Doesn't Matter"), the rest of the record is actually quite poppy and peppy compared to much of Depeche Mode's back catalogue. On the group's morbid and melancholic terms, of course, which translates to a slamming, industrial strength single about bigotry ("People Are People"), a mechanized, call-and-response celebration of sadomasochism, and steely, razor-sharp synths that swoon, twinkle, honk and implode ("Stories Of Old"). And then there's that lustful newlywed couple on the cover — albeit a lustful newlywed couple plopped in front of a Blade Runner-type background — an image that ought to be scored by "Somebody," a rare vocal turn from primary songwriter Martin Gore that's sappier than a maple tree come autumn. To think this future-shocked classic was recorded in 1984, too.

Rewarded
Well this for me, is the climax of Depeche Mode's evolvolution from inovators of industrial pop to rulers of their genre. 'Some great reward' shows the listener what the band have become; thoughtful songwriters and accomplished studio performers. There are tricks and techniques galore in the production but they never let go of the importance of the song, listen to 'Something to do' or 'Somebody' for example. This isn't the best album from Depeche Mode (Speak & Spell) nor is it the purest (A broken Frame) it isn't even the most inventive (Construction Time again) but it has combined all those elements for the listeners great reward. If you are an eighties fan this is a must.
DEPECHE MODE SOME GREAT REWARD
This is Depeche Mode's 4th album and for inspiration, and because of the fact I like to write in depth detailed reviews, I'm going to refer to some sleeve notes here. The songs on Some Great Reward were still accessible but the sound of the album was becoming more complex, and they felt the need to progress. Something that has always been a part of Depeche Mode's music. The technology was progressing to and the band harnessed this as well, it is best to have the ideas first and use the technology to enhance those ideas. But sometimes the technology inspires the ideas. It works both ways. People weren't using sampling much in those days, so when you switched on a machine it was like a blank sheet of paper, because there still weren't many references. Everything you did was new, which is healthy because it means it's coming from your own imagination. This in itself speaks volumes, why Depeche Mode are in my opinion one of the greatest bands that have ever lived. The is just no one that comes close to what they are trying to achieve and have achieved now, due to the massive worldwide success they've had over the years, through basically constantly touring and being an AWESOME LIVE BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE ON PLANET EARTH SHOULD LOVE THIS BAND. THEY ARE AN INCREDIBLE BAND JUST AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
