Album Review

Far and away the prettiest record Jethro Tull released at least since Thick as a Brick and a special treat for anyone with a fondness for the group's more folk-oriented material. Ian Anderson had moved to the countryside sometime earlier, and it showed in his choice of source material. The band's aggressive rock interplay and Anderson's fascination with early British folk melodies produce a particularly appealing collection of songs — the seriousness with which the group took this effort can be discerned by the album's unofficial "full" title on the original LP: "Jethro Tull With Kitchen Prose, Gutter Rhymes, and Divers Songs from the Wood." The group's sound was never more carefully balanced between acoustic folk and hard rock — the result is an album that sounds a great deal like the work of Tull's Chrysalis Records labelmates Steeleye Span (though Nigel Pegrum never attacked his cymbals — or his entire drum kit — with Barriemore Barlow's ferocity). The harmonizing on "Songs From the Wood" fulfills the promise shown in some of the singing on Thick as a Brick, and the delicacy of much of the rest, including "Ring Out, Solstice Bells" (where the group plays full out, but with wonderful elegance), "Hunting Girl," and "Velvet Green," set a new standard for the group's sound. "Pibroch (Cap in Hand)," which is dominated by Martin Barre's electric guitar — in a stunning array of overlapping flourishes at full volume — is the only concession to the group's usual hard rock rave-ups, and even it has some lovely singing to counterbalance the bulk of the song.

Quite splendid!

The first of their rustic trilogy marked quite a change of direction and not the one expected either as we had been promised a more straight ahead heavy rock album following the rather ordinary Too Old to Rock and roll. Reflecting the Great man's move to the country in Bucks, this was a lovely surprise and the concerts promoting this album saw my first ever gig at Hammersmith on 12 February 1977 with the album coming out the following Monday. Songs from the Wood, Jack in the Green, Velvet Green all show Mr Anderson at the top of his game displaying a folkier sound than we had heard before. Pibroch and Hunting Girl were heavier but with a strong folky influence. Singles Ring out Solstice bells, the Whistler along with the magnificent Fires at Midnight complete this album along with the only filler track Cup of Wonder. One of the best Tull albums and a must purchase for any listener who appreciates quality music. If you don't know Tull, download Songs from the Wood, if you like that take the rest, if not go immediately to the cloth eared nincompoop section and try some Take That.

Just get It

What can I say! The very first Tull album i've ever bought and i'm now in love. To think that i've been alive 28 years and never heard this before seems a tragic waste of life. You can shove all these modern bands up the bottom of modern music 'cause this is a masterclass in songwriting and musicianship. Incredibly tight arrangements, played with incredible skill are only part of it. The harmony and melody strikes joy into my music gland every time I hear this album. It's a perfect blend of folk and rock and quite frankly should be heard by all and sundry. BUY IT NOWWWWWW!!!!!

A day without The Tull is a day without sunshine

The Tull are an integral part of what sets British music of the period apart from US music, Songs from the Wood smells of wood smoke, tastes of real ale and conjures up the smells of damp dog. The US music of the mid seventies was nothing more than a face full of dust on a dangerous highway somewhere in a desert both physical and cultural. Anderson is a genius.

Jethro Tull was a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their...
