Album Review

Alicia Keys' debut album, Songs in A Minor, made a significant impact upon its release in the summer of 2001, catapulting the young singer/songwriter to the front of the neo-soul pack. Critics and audiences were captivated by a 19-year-old singer whose taste and influences ran back further than her years, encompassing everything from Prince to smooth '70s soul, even a little Billie Holiday. In retrospect, it was the idea of Alicia Keys that was as attractive as the record, since soul fans were hungering for a singer/songwriter who seemed part of the tradition without being as spacy as Macy Gray or as hippie mystic as Erykah Badu while being more reliable than Lauryn Hill. Keys was all that, and she had style to spare — elegant, sexy style accentuated by how she never oversang, giving the music a richer feel. It was rich enough to compensate for some thinness in the writing — though it was a big hit, "Fallin'" doesn't have much body to it — which is a testament to Keys' skills as a musician. And, the fact is, even though there are some slips in the writing, there aren't many, and the whole thing remains a startling assured, successful debut that deserved its immediate acclaim and is already aging nicely.

Customer Reviews

A powerful debut by a powerful voice

It's hard to believe she was so young and relatively new to the game, but the quality of this album is without question. A womans worth and Fallin are now among my favourite r n b tracks, although I would recommend the whole album.

Wonderful Debut

After having been transferred to J Records by Clive Davis, Alicia wasted no time in submitting an album of songs which she had had stockpiled for a while ("Butterflyz" was written by Alicia when she was 14 years old), and the songs all express a deep and yet playful emotion. There is the playful flirting of "Girlfriend", the Isaac-Hayes-flavoured "Rock Wit U" and of course, the classic and irresistable "Fallin'", certainly one of the songs of the decade. Through it all, Alicia communicates an attitude of being totally in control of what she is singing and her stunning piano arrangements. The only things wrong with this album is that the lyrics can be a bit cliched ("The Life" and "Mr.Man"), and I am also worried that Alicia has peaked too soon. If any of her albums can match this effort, then she is adding to her superstar quality. If you only buy one Alicia Keys album, this is it.

Classic

R&B CLASSIC A must own for all music fans. Fallin' is one of my all time favourite songs. Produced beautifully fresh, this album establishes her as one of the greatest voices of the world.

By mixing R&B with a sultry dose of neo-soul, Alicia Keys became an international star in 2001 with the release of her debut album. Songs in A Minor sold more than 50,000 copies during its first day of availability and eventually moved over ten million units worldwide, thus setting the stage for the 20 year-old's long career. Although she shared the charts with R&B contemporaries like Destiny's Child, Keys' talent distinguished her as a different sort of diva, one who played a variety of...
