iTunes Review
David Gahan must have gotten sick of answering the same questions around Songs of Faith and Devotion's release — variations of "no really, how are you going to top Violator?" and "what's with the leather and the long hair, dude? We get it: You're kinda gothy, kinda rocky now, right down to the rehiring of Nitzer Ebb/Nine Inch Nails producer Flood on your new record. But why?" To which Gahan could have simply replied, "Did you sing on a little song called 'Personal Jesus?' I didn't think so." As for a direct answer to the Violator question, none of Depeche Mode's new singles was as huge or hooky as "Enjoy the Silence" or that "Jesus" song. But that was to be expected. At least they were a fitting follow-up, a soulful, shadowy collection of songs that strut and stomp ("I Feel You"), crawl and creep ("In Your Room"), and ... bring to mind the movie Braveheart ("Judas")? Yep. This one is a strange, satisfying beast, for sure, made all the moodier by a recent remastering treatment, atmospheric and jazzy remixes, and a bonus documentary fittingly subtitled "We were going to live together, record together... and it was going to be wonderful..." Good thing one man's misery is a nice addition to another man's album collection.

My personal favourite DM album
Don't get me wrong, I love Violator, with Personal Jesus and the fantastic Enjoy The Silence. But as an album, I think Songs Of Faith And Devotion tops it. The whole album is worthy of download, with classic tracks such as I Feel You and Walking in My Shoes. However, if you choose just one from this album to spend your 79p on, go for In Your Room from this album. Absolutely fantastic, and better than the single version on 86>98 album. But, be brave, go download one of the best albums ever...
A definitive and essential album
'Songs of Faith and Devotion' is a pure classic. A beautifully crafted blend of different styles of music, electronically executed to produce one of the most organic classics you simply can't tire of. Starting off with the 3/4 time 'I Feel You', this album moves through soulful pieces like 'Condemnation', 'Get Right with Me' and the orchestral 'One Caress', proving that Martin Gore and Depeche Mode have wide ranging inspirations and impeccable taste and respect for other styles. Punctuating these are more of the classic writings of Martin L Gore and the familiar intelligent, inspirational use of analogue and digital synths and samplers than Depeche Mode do so well. A landmark for fans and music. Download it now.
Inate Sense of Timing
1993, Grunge, Nirvana, Rock was back in town and the boys from Basildon pulled it off once again. It's been written that Depeche Mode have the ability to produce music that is relevant to it's time. Without doubt the strength and drive apparent in this album was heavily influenced by the bands own personal influences/problems etc. The hardest sounding and probably the most commanding (lyrically) album they have ever produced. Many subjects are covered in what is ultimately a very uplifting album once the context of the sound and lyrics is understood. Without seperating from their electronic roots Depeche manage to introduce and combine effortlessly, live drums, raw guitar, gospel backing vocals, string quartets, in only the way Depeche Mode can. Constantly pushing back musical bounderies, this album and the resulting tour ultimately pushed too far, resulting in Alan Wilder leaving. Buy the album, watch Devotional Live, and believe what you read about what happened whilst they toured for 18 months. Truly Awesome.
