Album Review

After just three albums in three years, Girls Aloud had enough smash hits for a greatest-hits collection, The Sound of Girls Aloud: The Greatest Hits, which compiles a dozen Top Ten singles and adds three new songs. Since rising to fame on the television show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002, the all-girl quintet experienced remarkable success in tandem with the production team Xenomania. Not only did all of the group's singles reach the Top Ten of the U.K. charts, if not the Top Five; the girls were also well-received from a critical standpoint more often than not. The Sound of Girls Aloud includes the three singles from the group's first album, Sound of the Underground (2003), most notably the chart-topping title track, and the five singles from the second album, What Will the Neighbors Say? (2004), all of them Top Five hits. The third full-length effort by Girls Aloud, Chemistry (2005), was a bit less successful than the first two, failing to reach the Top Ten of the U.K. albums chart, yet it still managed to spawn the four hit singles compiled here. These 12 singles are sequenced non-chronologically. In addition, there are three new songs sequenced late in the album: "Something Kinda Ooooh," "Money," and a cover version of Tiffany's 1987 international chart-topping smash "I Think We're Alone Now." These Xenomania productions are welcome additions to the Girls Aloud catalog, especially the standout lead single "Something Kinda Ooooh."

Pure Pop Genius

When Girls Aloud exploded onto the scene in 2002 with the undeniably brilliant #1 'Sound of the Underground,' it became clearly quite quickly that they were no ordinary pop group. Take 5 unbelievably sexy singers, the musical genius of Xenomania and a bit of 'va va voom' and you have Girls Aloud's formula of success. From the rocky sounds of No Good Advice and Wake Me Up, to the pop anthems Love Machine and Jump, and then onto the grungy Life Got Cold and stunning Whole Lotta History....this Greatest Hits package includes some of the most inventive, adventerous tracks of this age of modern pop. Even the low points, namely See The Day & I Think We're Alone Now, manage to sound acceptable on this collection of hits, showcasing the unparalleled brilliance of the Girls Aloud 'machine.' 'Something Kinda Ooooh' was the album's lead release and went on to become one of the groups biggest singles to date - and rightly so. It's infectious chorus and incredible beat just goes to show that after 4 years together and an unbeaten record of Top 10's - these ladies still have a lot to offer. 'The Sound of Girls Aloud' is a must-have for any music fan. It defines the era of 00's pop.

The best greatest hits album

Where do I start: Four no.1 platinum albums!! 3 no.1 singles!! 15 top ten hits!! So this so called "manufactured" pop band havent done that bad after all? Even after some stick from Lily Allen (COW ¬¬, but good album :]) and the press they managed too stay on top, and this album just proves how good they really are, and with another one on the way! The album is full of friendly clean pop, and something kinda Ooh and no good advice are pop electrooo and im glad they are keeping too this new sound in their new single sexy, nonono i think they are going too stick around for a few more years and they are most definite the most succesful girl band ever...

Biography

Formed: November, 2002 in England

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s

Despite their prefabricated formation through a television program called Popstars: The Rivals, Girls Aloud achieved both mainstream success and widespread critical acclaim in their native England. Through Popstars' process of elimination, Girls Aloud's membership amounted to Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Cheryl Tweedy, and Kimberley Walsh. The group took shape in November 2002, and soon began a streak of Top Ten singles that broke a record for girl groups and remained unbroken through...
