iTunes Review

Over four years, from 1983 to 1987, the Smiths produced an enduring catalog that included four studio albums and a slew of singles and b-sides often collected on a variety of compilation albums. This 2008 collection, overseen by Morrissey and Johnny Marr, collects 23 tracks in its “single-disc” edition and an additional 22 tracks, including B-sides, exclusive 12-inch releases and live recordings, for the “two-disc” expanded version. Taken either way, it’s an embarrassment of riches, as Johnny Marr’s lyrical guitar riffs supply the empathetic poetry necessary to support Morrissey’s emotionally charged lyrical concerns. From shameless self-pity to rampant narcissism, unrelieved sorrow to bursts of temporary joy, the Smiths took adolescence and channeled its hormonal wildness into gorgeous pop songs. The two-minute nightclub apocalypse of “Panic”, the wallflower ennui of “Ask”, and the sublime damp futures of “William, It Was Really Nothing” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” highlight the flow of The Smiths’ unrelenting single releases, while the majesty of such b-sides as “Half A Person”, “Girl Afraid”, and the live versions of “Meat is Murder” and “London”, attest to the group’s fully formed strengths.

Customer Reviews

OK - but there's better alternatives.

5 stars for the music, 1 start for the packaging. If your a newbie I would say your better off to go and buy the 'Queen is Dead', 'Meat is Murder' etc at a music store/ebay - because they seem to be selling these albums at a bargin price these days - You could probably get three CD albums for around the price of this combination. If you want them on your ipod, just rip the CD's to itunes. Also as a fan I already own this music and the 'rare' stuff isn't that hard to find - For a newbie it's also not a great place to start either, you'll be much better with the main studio albums...

Re-mastered by the master

This CD was Remastered by ex songwriter of The Smiths, Jonny Marr (the guitarist), after being unable to stand the fact that all of The Smiths' music that has been put onto CD (up to now) has been done by complete amateurs. Marr has just spent the last couple of years remastering the whole of The Smiths' back catalogue and the engineering is faithful to the (vinyl) sound production he did while the band were together. This selection is a great mix of early to mid Smiths recordings, and I'd advise any new fans to wait for the remastered CD's by Marr to come out before buying any albums so you can appreciate the music as it was orignally intended, rather than listening to the early and inferior digitalised CD's done by some 'amateur hour' sound engineer who had no love for the music but rather only wanted to get the job done as quickly as possible.- 'Paint a vulgar picture'.

who needs this?

Five stars out of respect for the music - but seriously, you have them all on cassette, vinyl, CD, your iPod and PC. Save yourself money and just copy the playlist - you've got the lot.

Biography

Formed: 1982 in Manchester, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s

The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by...
