iTunes Review

It’s an odd concept but Sounds of the Universe is a bit of a “roots” move for Depeche Mode. They’ve gathered their ancient analog synths and with producer Ben Hillier (who also handled the previous Playing the Angel) set out to rediscover their initial magic. Yet, Martin Gore has grown as a songwriter and David Gahan has emerged as one, giving the band a diversity and depth than enables them to perform at full strength nearly three decades on. While “Wrong” certainly recalls their previous work with Hillier and “Peace” uses an immediately identifiable DM bassline to accompany Gahan’s strongest vocal to date, there are plenty of moments that send DM into a new realm. “In Chains” begins with a slow churn, a low-key build that sets the tone for the album. Drum machines and deliberately clunky, primitive synths relay the sound, but the band’s experience can’t be discounted as they mend these mechanical objects to human ends. The hooks never let up. Despite the variety of approaches, “Hole to Fill”, “Wrong” and “Corrupt” all succeed with their consistently appealing hooks.

getting better and better

theres not alot you can say about depeche that hasnt been said over the last few years.this album is pure quality and just gets better with every listen.best album since violator and cant wait for the tour which will knock spots off all the great pretenders. long live the mode (the most underated band in the universe)

Disappointing

First off, I'm a massive fan of Depeche Mode, but I find this album quite weak. From the first listen I pretty much disliked every track except maybe Miles Away and Corrupt. Although it does grow on you slowly I find that the structure of the songs don't work and songs such as Come Back have bad textures aswell as choruses that won't stick in your head. The lyrics are also fairly cliche'd and even slightly embarrassing in the case of Peace. Overall probably my least favourite DM album, but still better than most music out at the moment and hasn't stopped me from booking tickets to see them live.

Not what I was expecting

Good production though the whole album seems flat, it does'nt go anywhere Wrong & Jezebel being the exceptions. I was expecting something similar to Violator.

Originally a product of Britain's new romantic movement, Depeche Mode went on to become the quintessential electro-pop band of the 1980s.
