Album Review

When it comes to death metal, no band is more convincing than Slayer. For other bands, focusing on death, Satanism, the supernatural, and the occult became a cliché; but Slayer's controversial reflections on evil always came across as honest and heartfelt. The group's sincerity is the thing that makes South of Heaven so disturbing and powerful — when the influential thrashers rip into such morbid fare as "Spill the Blood," "Mandatory Suicide," and "Ghosts of War," they are frighteningly convincing. With their fourth album, Slayer began to slow their tempos without sacrificing an iota of heaviness or incorporating any pop elements. South of Heaven would be Slayer's last album for Def Jam. When Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons (brother of Joseph "Run" Simmons of Run-D.M.C.) parted company, Slayer went to Rubin's new company Def American, while LL Cool J, Slick Rick, and other rappers recorded for Simmons at Def Jam.

South Of Heaven

Reign In Blood: fast, furious, frenetically one paced. Very good. Very overrated. South Of Heaven: powerful, majestic. Brutal, yet poetic. Underrated and magnificent. Mandatory Suicide, Colossal. Thou shalt not kill?. Anti-war doesn't get more evangelic. Born again? Take a look.

A Grower

After the perfection of Reign in Blood, where could they go? They couldn't really get any faster so they slowed things down. Tom Araya described this as 'a grower' and I think thats the best way to look at it. Agression and hate fill this album just as before but they achieve it in a different way. The title track is billiant and sets the pace of the record and Silent Scream nods a head to their faster stuff. Personal favourite....Ghosts of War. It's a very good record and you won't be dissapointed if you buy it, but I wouldn't suggest it as your first Slayer purchase as it doesn't represent the general sound of the band, but it's a good second one, to hear them do something else.

South of Heaven

This is most definately a 'grower', fast furious and aggressive. This album is best played in the car max volume through tunnels and long underpasses. The songs really put these guys through their paces and really shows what a wonderfully talented bunch they really are. Firstly the song writing talent in 'South of Heaven' and the technical ability in 'Silent Scream' takes your breath away. Once your into this you'll love the other songs too. My current favorite is 'Read between the lies'. Slayer are definately the best Thrash Rock Band Ever!

Biography

Formed: 1982 in Huntington Beach, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Slayer were one of the most distinctive, influential, and extreme thrash metal bands of the 1980s. Their graphic lyrics deal with everything from death and dismemberment to war and the horrors of hell. Their full-throttle velocity, wildly chaotic guitar solos, and powerful musical chops paint an effectively chilling sonic background for their obsessive chronicling of the dark side; this correspondence has helped Slayer's music hold up arguably better than the remaining Big Three '80s thrash outfits...
