Album Review

To his credit, Steve Hackett learned from the mistakes made on Please Don't Touch, and delivered a much-improved mix of songs and instrumentals on 1975's Spectral Mornings. With a workable backing band that includes John Shearer, Nick Magnus, and former Decameron bassist Dik Cadbury, the ex-Genesis guitarist exploits his strengths: progressive instrumentals that skip between heaven and hell, pastoral pop songs, and a healthy dose of English humor. Vocalist Peter Hicks takes the lead on a few tracks, and as the honey-fied "The Virgin and the Gypsy" makes clear, his voice is much better suited to the material than Richie Havens. Hackett's lone vocal cameo, "The Ballad of the Decomposing Man," is a Pythonesque treat. The guitar work is typically top-notch, equally effective in acoustic sections that feature John Hackett's flute and in tempestuous arrangements where Steve's trademark electric guitar pierces through the chaos. The guitarist also extends his range to the Cantonese koto (presumably a variation on the Japanese koto) for the delicate instrumental "The Red Flower of Tachai Blooms Everywhere"; in typically mischievous fashion, it lulls the listener into a false sense of relaxation for the sonic onslaught of "Clocks — The Angel of Mons." For many, Voyage of the Acolyte is the definitive Hackett record, but Spectral Mornings is more indicative of his range as a solo artist. The music is true to progressive rock in sound if not in scope, a trait which endears Hackett to Genesis fans who found that band's subsequent commercialization distasteful.

A TRUE MASTERPIECE FROM A UNIQUE ARTIST

Still Hackett's greatest work, this record is deeply rich with an awesome range of atmospheres, emotion and grandeur - all made possible by his arguably unique combination of strength as a composer and otherwordly skill on guitars of all specifications - acoustic 6 and 12 string, electric through dizzying effects and pioneering efforts on guitar synthesiser. You can spend hours trying to work out which made what sound, but won't bother because the compositional effect is so moving, engaging and mind-widening. This record takes you to other places. Hackett redefined the true meaning of progrossive rock with this work, by effortlessly taking the concept way beyond the norms of the genre. Only Floyd have matched it, and even then in a narrower musical form. If you only buy one Hackett album make it this one. Put it alongside Selling England By the Pound (Genesis), Dark Side of the Moon (Floyd), OK Computer (Radiohead) and Takk... (Sigur Ros) and know you have the finest five works of true progressive rock in your collection. What a treat. MC

Rich Beyond All Comparison

I saw "Clocks" being performed by Steve Hackett on the The Old Grey Whistle Test [BBC2] in 1979. From the bass pedal intro played by Steve's brother, John, to the solo drumming of John Shearer at the end and all of the unique guitar playing of Steve himself throughout, this track overwhelmed me. I bought the album the next day and totally understood why Genesis stopped being Genesis the day Steve walked out. This album is truly rich beyond all comparisons. The layered sound has a depth that will have you discovering more and more each time you listen to it. Buy it, listen to every track and be overwhelmed too.

Classic Hackett

WOW! I have this album on vinyl but haven't listened to it for many years. It's like being reunited with an old friend. Plus the extra mixes, fantastic. A real must for all Genesis fans. Hacketts guitar playing is up there with the greats. Well done iTunes, keep up the good work.

Steve Hackett is best known as the guitarist with Genesis during their best years as both a progressive and commercial band, across ten albums of their history. His arrival in the group's lineup at the start of 1971, replacing original guitarist Anthony Phillips, provided the group with the last ingredient that it needed for success.
