Album Review

With a boost from Pete Tong's radio show, wunderkind Deadmau5 (aka Joel Zimmerman) has made his presence felt in the progressive house scene. This 2009 mix album compiles previously released and unreleased tracks, sequenced and segued like one of Deadmau5's exciting live spots. The spare aggression of "FML" is a dramatic kickoff to a collection that demonstrates Zimmerman's skill in manipulating moods. A funereal organ theme runs through both the playful "Moar Ghosts n Stuff" and its powerful companion track, "Ghosts n Stuff" (featuring an angsty/sexy vocal from Pendulum's Rob Swire), exploring both ends of the life/death continuum, before sliding effortlessly into the celebratory "Hi Friend!" (featuring MC Flipside). "The 16th Hour" bubbles along on a manic riff — compelling if not inventive — until a quiet interlude prettily deconstructs and comments on the original motif. The gorgeous and restorative "Strobe" lets listeners/dancers down gently. ~ Paula Carino, Rovi

really really great album

awesome album all songs are great ghosts and stuff and strobe being my two favourites but all are really good, i would deffinately recommend getting this album :)

Filled with filler.. with only a few highlights.

I have been a fan of Deadmau5 for a while now, since I first heard his music on a game soundtrack (Wipeout). His earlier works like I Remember (obviously), Ghosts n Stuff (not even featured on his first album) and The Reward Is Cheese, along with other songs, were amazing.

This seems pretty quickly put together though, with almost the entire album sounding like filler. The first track, FML, is very repetative (and not in a good, house music style... it's just boring) and doesn't sound good at all. I don't like the drumming, but to be fair the bassline is good.

The next track, Moar Ghosts n Stuff, is pretty good and I like it. An interesting remix of a classic, but again gets a little repetative towards the end, and it doesn't have the hook that the original had.

Ghosts n Stuff featuring Rob Swire is clearly the highlight of the album, and it seems like the rest of the album is based around it. Great song, but if you're reading this you probably know that already. Vocals in all the right places!

Hi Friend is one of the first Deadmau5 tunes I heard, and to this day it's still one of my favourites, shame it took so long to show up in an album though. Good MC'ing :)

The next few tracks I don't have much to say about. Bot is alright, nothing memorable but it's ok to listen to. Word Problems is probably the worst song on the album, it sounds like a child could have made it. Soma is more of the same, really dull and boring stuff. I waited for something to happen for the entire track and was left unsatisfied at the end. Lack of a Better Name is an improvement, some quirky notes in it and doesn't leave you quite as sleepy at the end, and things perk up again on The 16th Hour, which is a bit more energetic and bassy.

The final track, Strobe, is very long and is quite trancy/ambient, especially to start off with. About 3/4 through the song we hear the bass kick in, making this a good finisher to an otherwise non-special album.

If you're a big fan, you should probably get it so you don't feel left out. Otherwise, I'd recommend getting only Ghosts n Stuff (feat Rob Swire), Hi Friend, The 16th Hour and Strobe, as these are the only ones that are possibly worth paying for.

yes.

this thumps.
moar, 16th and strobe are highlights.
