Album Review

Even as the Clientele's hazy, soft-focus pop suggests the influence of virtually every musical ancestor worth acknowledging, the band's pastoral beauty nevertheless conjures a dreamscape entirely its own; fusing the heady otherness of psychedelia with the gentle caress of folk, Suburban Light swirls and settles like gold dust. Like the artist Joseph Cornell, the titular subject of one of the disc's most memorable songs, the Clientele assemble and juxtapose found fragments (collected from forebears like Love, Nick Drake, and Donovan) and transform their source materials into something magical and new; although the record's 13 cuts assemble various singles and scattered recordings, the finished product hangs together with a clear sense of purpose and scope. Over repeated listens, the songs grow both more distinctive and more interconnected, boasting a richly nuanced intricacy as intoxicating as it is elusive.

soft psychadelic bliss

i've fallen to sleep happily so many times to this record, not through any lack of enjoyment, but just down to the soft dreamlike world conjured up by the gentle guitar and vocals songs of love and exploring london bring it a real warmth- I had to say this was hardly off my record player. If you can track down the cover they did of the west coast pop art band's Tracy had a hard day Sunday- stunning.

I did just that from the staff favourites and I took to the music straight away, even my wife said 'what's that you bought , I like that.' My first reaction was China Crisis must have moved on but the references and influences keep coming whenever I listen. I'm not sure if The Clientele are aware of it but I think that they have just created a conceptual album that takes in the last twenty years and a bit more before. I gave top marks to bicycles and it is worth it for this track alone. Haven't tried listening in bed yet! This album will never leave my iPod.

Retrofitted pop band the Clientele had obvious roots in the hazy, autumnal glare of Galaxie 500 and Felt. Just as those bands took their Velvet Underground and Television records to heart without being derivative, the Clientele were able to chalk up an extensive discography riddled with lush melodies of their own without sounding...
