Album Review

Fleet Foxes cover a lot of territory — both musical and geographical — on Sun Giant, their debut EP for Sub Pop. The band's close, pristine harmonies and spare arrangements are at once timeless and a breath of fresh air, sharing roots with '60s folk-rock, 2000s indie pop, and ageless traditional songs. Fleet Foxes feel like they're singing to, and for, themselves on the EP, particularly on the title track, which lingers on their harmonies before drifting off on an acoustic guitar melody. Even on "Drops in the River," which builds from similarly simple beginnings to big drums and plugged-in guitars, the gentle beauty of the Foxes' melodies remains the same. From "English House"'s sparkling autoharps to the dreamy, soft rock-tinged "Mykonos," Sun Giant plays like it was culled from a backpacker's travel journal. With this intimate, organic, and tantalizing first glimpse at their music, Fleet Foxes sound like they've been making music a lot longer than their ages would suggest. Call it old soul music.

Best I've heard in a long, long time

Only caught these guys by chance on Radio 1 two days ago, I heard Mykonos, wow, the tune dragged me in slowly and left me wondering where the hell I'd been. Cracking track, I've spent days trying to explain the sound of the band but I'm glad to say that it sounds to me like there's too many influences to nail it. The other tunes on the EP give even more tribute to the vocals and specifically the harmonies and the scope of talent that they have. In my world, that makes this piece of work stunning and too refreshing to define. I'll be getting their previous tunes, as I am (it would seem) more than 6 months off the pace! Fleet Foxes.....very, very well done.

Outstanding!

A beautiful EP from Fleet Foxes. Soft, almost choir-esque, vocal harmonies and a deep, lush, layered sound. Quite a vintage feel to it, but Fleet Foxes are far more than a 70's throwback, they have a sound that (dare I say it...) is quite unique. The single, Mykonos has had a fair bit of airtime on radio of late, and rightly so. The song's catchy melody, effortless sophistication and easy charm speak for the rest of the EP. Refreshing to see a band using vocals to such effect: they're never overpowered, always beautiful and often the main, or only, instrument used. (check out Sun Giant and Innocent Son). The EP really is flawless, staggeringly beautiful, from start to finish, and it's rare you can say that of an album. Can't recommend it enough!

Addictive

This is the most additive album i have listened to in months if not years. It has influences from so many bands and styles and decades its different to put a finger on it. Every time i listen to it i hear something new and fresh which is pretty unique these days if you ask me. Try it. You'll love it
