Album Review
Somewhere between big-beat techno and more laidback trip-hop, the first album by Pepe Deluxe works in familiar territory. Many of these samples have been heard before, and the influences (ranging from easy listening to soundtracks to hip-hop) aren't very original either. Even if Super Sound doesn't earn points for the sound, however, it's an album of crisp grooves and hook-inflected tracks that never get boring.

The Finnish electronic trio Pepe Deluxe is an eclectic, artistically abstract bunch of musicians. The British press has been touting the band since the late '90s, but Pepe Deluxe first came together back in 1995. DJ Slow and Ja-Jazz collaborated on the Bomb Records electronic sampler Return of the DJ prior to fully forming a band; DJ James Spectrum joined shortly thereafter, and Pepe Deluxe was official.
