Album Review

Director Bryan Singer and composer John Ottman's take on the world's most recognizable superhero is one of deep reverence. Like Steven Spielberg and John Williams, the two have found their muse in each other, especially after their success with the second installment of the X-Men series, but what sets them apart from other iconic director/composer pairings is Ottman's co-role as an editor — he showed his musicality in the editing room on X2 with an exhilarating opening ballet of violence set to Mozart's Requiem. Ottman and Singer are well aware that Williams' original score for Richard Donner's 1978 depiction of the man of steel is as etched into the character's mythology as the "S" on his chest, so they built the new score around it. The new themes are deep and resonant with a Copland-esque tinge of sepia-toned Americana that never descends into unnecessary melodrama — think Michael Kamen's Band of Brothers theme — and a brooding sense of wonder and weight that echoes Danny Elfman's choral work on the Spider Man films. This Superman feels a lot more like a conflicted defender of the world than a bespectacled reporter relying on pratfalls and phone booths for audience chuckles, and Ottman fills his Metropolis with a perfect balance of dread and wonder, while allowing Williams' majestic and iconic theme to soar when it should.

The Legend Lives on....

A great score to the summer's best movie (pirates may have run off with the money but supes flys off with all the class). John Williams's old themes are lovingly woven into Ottman's new music. The new 'power of the sun' and 'lois and jason' themes are magical and can proudly be placed next to William's original main theme, love theme and 'kent farm' themes. a great achievement and I cant wait to hear Ottman's music for the next Superman movie in a few years time!

Aweso... I mean Super

What can I say About this Soundtrack that hasn't already been said. It's absoulutely Brilliant!!!. I was hesitant at first because it wasn't John Williams, but John Ottman has risen to the challenge and done a fantastic job. Welcome Back Superman. It's been too long.

Superman Returns, and so does the music!

Having been a Superman fan most of my life, I attended a screening of the latest installment, worried that the music, like the latest outing of 'Harry Potter' had been handled with clumsy music hands - "how can you better John Williams" I was heard saying, as the lights dimmed... Well, I worried needlessly, as Mr Williams' sublime and iconic theme rang out across the Cinema - I could relax! The score, mostly from John Ottman entirely suited the piece. His use of Williams' motifs were simply lovely, as the tune you knew slightly modified into a sublime conclusion. Ottman remained faithful to the spirit of the score, inspired by John Williams, and, at times, sounded like a mix between Willams and Aaron Copeland, as it soared as effortlessly as the Superhero. I look forward to the next instalment, and keep my fingers crossed that Ottman signs on the line for the sequel...
