Album Review

Glasgow's Gun are known for their large cult following and the decidedly American-sounding brand of hard rock that came from their decidedly Scottish bodies. Most fans don't see Swagger as the group peak, as the band finds it hard to settle on any one style throughout its 40 minutes. Some tracks come across like artsy gruff Jane's Addiction, others like a hybrid of Cast and Def Leppard, others still like the bluesy metal ballads of Bon Jovi. Swagger got a big boost out of the chart success of the band's "Word Up!," a Cameo cover as pointless as it is catchy. It makes sense that Mark Kerr took over the drums on this album, as "Something Worthwhile" is reminiscent of the rockier moments of his brother's band, Simple Minds.

Awsomely powerful

Some albums age badly, but listening again, I was pleasantly surprised to find Swagger still holds the raw power that blew me away when I first listened to it over 10 years ago. Then, it was my album of the year. From the first to last, this is a great album and well worth the money.

Bargain!

Wow! I hadn't heard this album in a long time until i downloaded it here the other day. I remember listening to it so much when i first bought it on cassette years ago, and to me, it's still a great album, with some very good songwriting. It's a shame that Gun didn't make it bigger than they did, but they're about more than that; they're excellent musicians and very good songwriters, and i think this was their best album. Some highlights for me are The Only One, Something Worthwhile, Vicious Heart, Crying Over You and their very good cover of the Cameo classic Word Up. If you like rock music with emotion and big guitars, i think this is a bargain.

Glasgows Finest

''Swagger...Lips Like Jagger''...a brilliant album from one of the most under-rated 'proper' rock bands ever to come out of the UK. Highly recommended. Look out for Gallus too, which IMHO is even better!

Biography

Formed: 1986 in Glasgow, Scotland

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s

A hard-rocking Glaswegian band, Gun first came to public attention in 1989 with their striking single "Better Days," a powerful driving rock thrash that stopped just short of the Top 30. "Better Days," along with follow-up "Money," formed part of their first album, Taking on the World (number 44). As ever, there have been the usual rock band lineup changes during Gun's recording history: two guitarists and two drummers have passed through, the nucleus being vocalist Mark Rankin and brothers Giuliano...
