unknown pleasure
I actually won this CD in a Christmas raffle. I wasn't sure about it at first -- there's a lot of folk music around at the moment, and this isn't at its adventurous end -- after a few listens I'd fallen for it hook line and sinker. His songs are simple and stripped back, mainly guitar arrangements and a simple single voice, but also quite complex in the way they sketch emotions, scenarios -- there's a few subtle narratives here and plenty to discover in the music and lyrics. This guy lays it all bare, which is very brave, I think. And if there's one standout track, it's Sorrow, which I really do reckon is up there with Joni. I've still no idea who this guy is tho!
Deeply Beautiful
His voice fills me with joy but at the same time I want to cry, the songs are full of ideas, brimming with sweet melodies, tender and honest. Folk music is a less stodgy place due to albums like this and Valentine is a change maker in a well established tradition. I look forward to the next cd!
alex valentine is all heart...
...and should be heard more widely. This differs from his previous album 'local history' having taken a folkier turn and is none the worse for that. I'm surprised he hasn't been snapped up by a major label by now. There is depth and honesty to his songs and after a few listens they attach themselves to you like friendly audio velcro. try it!
