iTunes Review

It wasn’t Mikel Jollett’s job as a music critic that inspired him to start making his own music so much as it was a grip of adversity; in one week his girlfriend dumped him, his mom found out she had cancer and he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that caused him spot baldness and skin depigmentation. The Airborne Toxic Event was born as Jollett’s cathartic vehicle. The quintet’s self-titled debut rocks with catchy song hooks and a commercial alternative radio familiarity that’s sure to hit home with fans of Joy Division, Interpol, The Strokes and Arcade fire – though opening cut “Wishing Well” has Jollett’s impassioned inflections sounding uncannily similar to Conor Oberst, replete with a quivering timbre and impressive literary lyrics. And it sounds again like there's a different singer on “Papillon” where Jollett downshifts from tenor to baritone with shaky Ian Curtis modulations. “Sometime Around Midnight” is a standout with lush strings leading into electric guitars and Jollett settling into his own unaffected voice.

InTOXICating

Like other reviewers, I came across the ATE through the free iTunes download of "Sometime Around Midnight". What a superb track. Although this differs from many of the other tracks here, the whole album is reminiscent of the Fratellis. Strong vocally, although some might say the depth of the lyrics themselves is sometimes shallow. All the songs are catchy, sometimes frantic, pop-tunes that may not be enduring musical masterpieces, but they still leave you wanting to hear them again and again. A refreshing and unique sound that deserves its five star rating.

Something brilliantly different

I also got the Itunes free single, sometime around midnight and liked it, then i listened to the rest of the album and loved it! I haven't stop listening to it since then, its great to hear something a little bit different and each song is unique, there's no set format to each one. The stand out tracks for me have got to be Gasoline, Wishing Well and Papillon but none of the others seem like fillers. As long as you give them a chance i think you'll be pleasantly surprised, i was.

Thank You iTunes

I have been downloading the free iTunes tracks for months now, and some decent tracks have defiantly cropped up. However the Sometime Around Midnight track that I got round to listening to after a few days of it being on my iPod is the best free track iTunes has offered. I had never heard of The Airborne Toxic Event before this, and yes I'm wondering how also. After listening to the track all day I came home and listened to more of the album on their MySpace and continued to buy this album. I can't stop listening to it!! Every track is different in its own right, but there all amazing, it’s impossible to pick out my favourites. So I just want to say thanks to iTunes for attracting my attention to this band, and seriously buy this album if you’re even the slightest bit interested, it won't let you down!! x x x

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Formed by novelist Mikel Jollett during a tumultuous period in his life, the Airborne Toxic Event (named after a section in American author Don DeLillo's novel White Noise) combine literate indie rock with real literary cred. Formed in 2006, the group initially took shape as a Los Angeles-based duo, with Jollett and drummer Daren Taylor serving as the only members. A roster expansion was eventually needed; as a result, classically trained violinist Anna Bulbrook was brought in to play viola and keyboards,...
