iTunes Review

While their 1993 debut album, Pablo Honey, displayed a British group with a firm hold on the potential for low-self esteem anthems (“Creep”) and a U2-like solemnity to merge in great effect, it prepared no one for the pop majesty that became their follow-up, 1995’s The Bends. Simply put, The Bends is one of the 1990s most bracing and inventive albums. It manages to explore new sounds without sacrificing its pop heart. “My Iron Lung” veers into abstract guitar passages but always returns to Thom Yorke’s gently assuring vocals for its sweet relief. “Fake Plastic Trees” is a monster, a slow-burning pressure cooker than explodes in perfect catharsis, while “High and Dry” is pure sweetness. Both tunes feature Yorke’s trademark falsetto that delivers the spine-chilling release. Yorke feasts on his bummer side for the title track where his personal apocalypse seems close at hand, while the triple guitar interplay between Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, and Ed O’Brien never settles for cliché, uncovering its own textured power in its quest for excited melodies. Radiohead were on their way to becoming one of the most distinctive bands of the 1990s and beyond.

The Fans Album

Its always argued that OK Computer was the album that satisfied the critics and undeniably that is a masterpiece. However The Bends has always been my favourite album of all time and i'm not alone in making this statement. Audibly stunning throughout it seeps of quality and still stands as an album most band in the genre try to follow. Undeniably awesome and would get 6 stars if i could give it.

the best

This album is the best ever produced. Chords that make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, guitar riffs and solos that stir your soul, songs so melodic yet enduring that you can listen to them over and over again. If you have not heard this album you have not lived. All the songs are masterpieces and you will chose a different favourite each month as you listen more and notice new moments of genius. After over 10 years since its release still nothing really compares. Truly unique.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Oxford, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Radiohead were one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's three-guitar attack, which relied on texture — borrowing as much from My Bloody Valentine and Pink Floyd as R.E.M. and Pixies — instead of virtuosity....
