MARMITE Topley Bird

MTB's voice is marmite. You love it or loath it. I like her brown soulful tones. If she chose to sing pop ballards she would be a sensation. But she sticks with her heart and sings slightly left of centre stuff that takes a few listens. Like my old school reports she "can do better" and has in the past. This is not a classic but if you invest in it or a few tunes you will be rewarded.

she's no duffy

finally a female singer that sounds as though she knows what she's singing about...what a brilliant album. Love the track valentine.

Praise Be To 'The Blue God'

Check this album out if you have enjoyed Martinas pipes on some of Tricky's recordings. The backing tracks are fairly varied genre-wise but the voice sits well in each track. There is a general air of melancholy (Phoenix, Baby Blue, Poison), but with a good splash of optimism mixed in (Carnies, Da Da Da Da). There are influences of her previous work & collaborations but this album also holds its own mark of originality. Just see how these melodies stick in your head! At 'under-a-fiver' it's an absolute bargain. I look forward to checking out her other albums. Enjoy!
