Customer Reviews
Fantastic!
I bought The Casket Letters on the strength of some good reviews elsewhere. Despite this, I was still surprised quite how good this album is. From the delicate acoustic musings of opening track "Statutory Rights" to the achingly dreamy final track, "When the Work is Done", it somehow manages to be both cohesive and varied throughout. Highlights for me include the majestic "Elizabeth and Mary", the lyric of which is based on the circumstances surrounding the letters supposedly written by Mary Queen of Scots (which provided the album's name), and Bloodline, which must surely be released as a single at some point, as it has "hit" written all over it. Although the album covers a lot of ground musically, one thing that remains constant is the voice of lead singer Nat Johnson, who has a voice so disarmingly soothing that it almost shields against the sometimes dark lyrical themes running through the album. Of course, that's not to belittle the contribution made by the rest of the band who play an impressive array of instruments between them in order to provide the perfect arrangement of each song. I can't recommend this album enough. Certainly my album of 2007 so far.
Great name, superb album
Never heard of this band until I read a glowing review in The Sunday Times, so I gave them a listen and, guess what, the review was spot on - this is a really enjoyable, mellow album. Definitely recommended. Now go and listen to Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight - it's fab as well.
amazingly beautiful album
Great to hear MSTU getting the production they deserve in order to make their music sound its best. Nats voice is a pure as ever gliding effortlessly over warm sounding guitars and etherial accompanyment. Statutary rights is a true MSTU classic and how good does it sound to hear them rocking out a little with Elizabeth and Mary?! Great album, great songs, great band... follow them anywhere
