Album Review

On their first album, the Christians blend socially conscious lyrics of life under Thatcher with smooth, slickly programmed pop-soul arrangements, produced by Laurie Latham who was responsible for the popular Brit-soul sound of Paul Young. The single "Forgotten Town" sets the tone for the album: propulsive verses leading to choruses laden with the Christian brothers' three-part harmony. "Ideal World," as the title suggests, imagines a world without racism and suffering; "Born Again" finds solace from the ills of society in friends and lovers. "Hooverville" compares Thatcher's Britain to the poverty-filled reign of one of America's least successful presidents. A solid debut with very few filler tracks. [Island's 1990 edition included three bonus tracks.]

I must buy a record player

I used to play this album to death when I was at college but when I got a CD player the album got lost with all my old vinyl. So listening to it again some years later is always going to be viewed a hint of nostalgia. I was suprised how fresh and well produced it sounds. The songs are well crafted with ForgottenTown, Ideal World, and Hooverville the stand out tracks.

80's classic

I'm digging for some mid 80's track for a film I'm working on, always loved this record and only have on vinyl, so gone onto i-tunes to download and every track still sounds as great and poignant as it did then. Just buy this record, you won't regret it.

awe inspiring

still as unbelievable today, as it was back then. every track takes me to places of past and present memories of lifes ups and downs. in my mind, a truly emotionally touching, superb album.
