iTunes Review
While Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler form the nucleus of Black Sabbath, the band takes on a very different identity with singer Ronnie James Dio chartering the melodies and drummer Vinny Appice setting the rhythms. The name change to Heaven and Hell makes a certain amount of sense. The grungy, repetitive riffs the band excelled with under singer Ozzy Osbourne are replaced with more traditional, epic heavy metal fare. These fellas wrote the book on hard rock, so if they’re borrowing from anyone for the grunting riffs behind “Double the Pain” or “Bible Black”, it’s themselves. Most tunes head for the five to six minute mark to make their impression. The time is used to build the drama, throw in an extra guitar solo, and nail down a final chorus. The copyright may say 2009, but tunes such as “Rock and Roll Angel”, “Eating the Cannibals”, and “Breaking Into Heaven” could’ve been birthed three decades ago when these folks first got together. Classic hard rock moves at every turn.

Rolling doom
On first listen not one single track jumps out and says to the listener "hit single" or "jaunty jingle" Initially I thought that was a major fault but I was wrong. This is a hard rock album, fitting perfectly into the Black Sabbath canon of doom laden lyrics and thunderous bottom end. It was somewhere through the third run through that it became apparent that this is an album to be consumed in a single sitting not dipped into like a rag bag collection. So, no Neon Knights to whistle along to just (a very big just) a solid rewarding collection of ten songs performed by men steering a stately wall of sound; incisive lead guitar, fluid rolling rhythmic bass locking and weaving together with rock solid drumming and topped of with older and wiser understated vocals. Buy it.
Disappointing but OK
I had very high hopes for this album, early Dio Sabbath is amongst my favourite music of all time but what we have here is just decent. Dio`s vocals remain remarkable and Iommi is in fine fettle (some fantastic guitar solos in here) but the song writing is somewhat lacklustre...reminiscent of latter day Dio solo albums. Certainly a perfectly listenable, enjoyable experience but not an album I can still see myself playing in 6 months time.
Q: How much more Black can it be?
A: None more Black. A doom laden slab of classic Sabbath which takes a few listens to get the feel of the album, its worth it though, Dio's colossal vocals wrap evil and menace around Iommi's huge crushing riffs. Vinnie's drumming sounds like it's coming straight out of Satan's rumbling belly. Geezer is far more audible than on Dehumizer. Atom & Evil and Bible Black are the stand out killer songs for me. Make no mistake this is Black Sabbath at it's best regardless of their current monicker.
