Album Review
During the first several years of the 2000s, it wasn't unreasonable to want Mos Def, one of the most dazzling living MCs, to make a rap album. After he released 2006's True Magic, his first all-rap release in seven years — following the back-to-back instant classics Black Star and Black on Both Sides — it was easier to understand why he had been devoting much more time to acting and diversions like The New Danger. It was evident that he was not inspired, no doubt prompting a fair portion of his followers to think, "OK, maybe we should have been more specific: please make a good rap album." On The Ecstatic, it's not as if Mos Def makes a full return to the lucid/bug-eyed rhymes heard on decade-old cuts like "Hater Players" and "Hip Hop." Instead, he comes up with a mind-bending, low-key triumph, the kind of magnetic album that takes around a dozen spins to completely unpack. Oscillating between cerebral gibberish and seemingly nonchalant, off-the-cuff boasts, it's obvious that Mos Def is back to enjoying his trade. For those who are deeply into the Stones Throw label, the album won't take quite as long to process. Some of the productions from brothers Madlib and Oh No were pulled from their instrumental releases, including a pair from the India-themed installments of the Beat Konducta series. Altogether, they provide much of the album's dusty off-centeredness; even though "Supermagic" has Mos Def at his most energized and alert, its needling psychedelic guitars and sweeping Bollywood drama are transportive. Combined with backdrops from Georgia Anne Muldrow, Preservation, the Neptunes' Chad Hugo, and the Ed Banger label's Mr. Flash, the album is a gumbo that adds juicy dub thwacks, regal synthetic horns, tangled piano vamps, dashes of spiritual jazz, and rolling Afro-beat, almost all of which is cloaked in light reverb. Though there are highlights throughout, two of the most notable tracks are at the very end: "History," where Talib Kweli joins in over a wistful J Dilla beat, and "Casa Bey," where a playful Mos Def somehow keeps up with Banda Black Rio's deliriously frantic samba funk.
Customer Reviews
Mos Def'inately buy it.
I'l be honest first time I heard of Mos Def was back when Brown Sugar was released in 2003. This is the first Mos Def album I have purchased, mainly because I wasn't ever sure on alot of his songs on previous albums. However this is complete genius.. I'm normally pretty bad for track hoping even on albums I genuinely like, but so far just today I have played this album fully through 6 times. My favourite song has to be Twilight Speedball, for some reason listening to it makes me feel like I am actually a part of New York. Mos Def I wouldn't be suprised if this song has/ or will be put forward to appear in a film in upcoming months. Keep doing what you're doing, because this album truely is great. If you don't like this album you have problems. R.
The Good stuff - welcome back Mos
After some patchy albums. Mos has come back strong! Still not quite as amazing or mesmerising as his debut. But, good material at last from one of Hip Hop's last hope as far as I'm concerned! I guess our expectations are high for a Mos Def album as he's such a deep and creative cat. And even his wordt album are ten times better than most other rappers. Nevrtheless this is a welcome return. Still dont feel like he's 100% throqing himself into the craft like before. Guess acting takes up a lot of time and energy...What am complaining about...finally I've got a Mos album I can bang in my car from start to end. Recommended!
Best Hip Hop of 2009
Mos Def has returned in inspiring form. People just don't realize how creative this album is. It's samples so many genres from funk, rock, jazz and classic hip hop. This should have won hip hop album of the year at the Grammies.
You got Twilight Speedballs masking itself in imagery a true artist can perform using that guitar chord to perfection. Life in Marvelous times is the centerpiece of the album, with an optimistic view on present modern day life, clashing with thumping beats aimed at the heart. Then you got Casa Bey and Quiet Dog, that show mos def has an unorthadox rap style over flaired horns and riffs into the beyond. You get the point that this is work of a rapper who has developed his musical appreciation. Not a bad track, and personal favourite has to be "roses".
Mos Def is keeping hip hop alive. Next stop "Lasers" by Lupe Fiasco
